Everett Klippert was a Calgary bus driver and the last Canadian convicted with a life sentence for being a dangerous sexual offender because of his homosexuality. The judgment led to public outrage and the subsequent decriminalization of homosexuality in 1969. His story, with the help of his family and the Calgary Gay History Project, attracted national attention and contributed to the Government of Canada’s historic apology to the LGBTQ2 community in 2017. The story of Everett Klippert inspired a talented local playwright named Natalie Meisner, and Sage Theatre approached her to produce Legislating Love. The production opened at the West Village Theatre and ran March 22-31, 2018, to much acclaim. Through the preservation of Everett Klippert’s story, the Calgary Gay History Project, Natalie Meisner, and Sage Theatre have made an important impact on our collective cultural heritage.

Marilyn Williams is a passionate and dedicated advocate for heritage initiatives in Calgary. She promotes conservation and public awareness through heritage research, analysis and evaluations, statements of significance, and management plans. Marilyn also volunteers countless hours on numerous city-wide and community heritage initiatives, with a strong focus on the cultural streetscapes and vernacular buildings of heritage communities. Marilyn is a passionate advocate for heritage districts and the important role they play in building a distinctive city with a sense of place and identity.

Bowness Park has been one of Calgary's most popular park destinations since it opened in 1912. The park was initially developed as an urban trolley park at a time when family parties were in vogue. Bowness Park is valued as a landmark, as the foremost leisure and recreational resort in Calgary that serves as a collective memory for the community, and for its bucolic quality which provides a vital link between people and nature. In recognition of this century-long legacy, and in response to its enduring popularity and subsequent use pressures, the City of Calgary undertook a rehabilitation project. The project has reversed the decline of natural amenities in Bowness Park, and restored or redeveloped selected built features and amenities. In celebration of the park, and after more than 100 years of active public use, Bowness Park was designated a Municipal Historic Resource in 2014.

The Anderson Residence, completed in 1975, was designed by Calgary-based architect Bill Boucock, and is highly valued as a significant and refined example of late West Coast Modern architectural style in Calgary. Its unique construction techniques and innovative design highlight the interrelationship between building and nature. To maximize the central garden and living spaces, Boucock borrowed building technology from greenhouse and agricultural buildings. The residence’s first owner, Gail Anderson, was an important figure in Alberta's arts and cultural scene. She served on Calgary's Public Art Board and spearheaded several important public art initiatives in the City. The Anderson Residence was designated as a Municipal Historic Resource in 2016.

Built 1930-32, the Bank of Montreal is the finest example of Beaux Arts-style architecture in Calgary and the most substantial and elaborate temple-form bank in the city. As the site of company's main operations in the city since the 1880s, the Bank of Montreal also symbolizes a long historical association to the city. Steiner Properties Ltd. undertook the task of renovating, restoring and re-tenanting the historic Bank of Montreal Building, located at 140 8th Ave SW, from 2011 through to late 2014. The project successfully repurposed the existing building and stimulated increased commercial activity on the Stephen Avenue National Historic District. The building was designated as a Municipal Historic Resource in 2016 and a Provincial Historic Resource in 2003.

The heritage Water Tower at St. Mary’s University was built in 1921 on the Midnapore site adjacent to Fish Creek Park. The tower is believed to be the only structure of its kind in Canada, made of wood at a time when steel water towers were coming into fashion. The tower was designated a Provincial Historic Resource in 1979. In 2017, with the guidance of Chalmers Heritage Conservation Ltd., St. Mary’s University began renovations to conserve and restore the heritage Water Tower structure. Completion of the restoration and conservation work, and the opening of the Mauro Gallery in 2018, ensure that this landmark is preserved for the appreciation of current and future generations of Calgarians.
