Representing Jesus in Troubled Times

By Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

Last week I watched a news article about a young African American woman who had been caught in a sudden downpour. She took shelter in a porch like area of an apartment building and called an Uber to take her the rest of the way home.

While she was waiting, a Caucasian woman came out of the apartment building and told her that she couldn’t wait there out of the rain. She then called the police to come and remove this woman.

In the era of cell phone cameras, this was all recorded and then shown on social media. These types of events have made it into the news quite a bit lately and highlights the racial tensions that still are felt in our world.

Christianity in general has the answer for moments like these. Jesus stated these words: “These things I command you, that you love one another,” (John 15:17, NKJV). Romans 13:10 adds: “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law,” (NKJV).

6,000 Educators Connect at Convention

Western Washington teachers and Washington Conference leaders had a busy week joining 6,000 teachers from around the United States and internationally for the North American Division Teacher's Convention in Chicago, Illinois!

"Connecting with educators from around the country is by far the best part of the national teacher convention," says Craig Mattson, Washington Conference VP for Education. "The daily worships and breakouts led by top educators in their fields is a very close second!"

Along with attending workshops, visiting education booths, and networking with other teachers, western Washington teachers had a blast exploring the exciting city of Chicago during their free time!

Monte Saxby Crosses the Finish Line!

Skagit Adventist Academy math teacher Monte Saxby and his son Craig have cycled from the coast of Puget Sound in Washington to Chicago, Illinois for the NAD Teacher's Convention. Teachers from Skagit Adventist Academy and representatives from Washington Conference and North American Division greeted them at the finish line with silly string and a ribbon to finish off their journey

"My "final stats" are: 2,147.3 miles 145 hours, 35 minutes!" says Monte in his latest Instagram post. "There are 2 small sections in Washington that I will be going back to complete soon which will make the total miles very close to 2,200!"

Hispanic Ministries First Men's Day!

Last Tuesday, we shared an #adventistlife feature about Men's Day in Out & About, about the exciting happenings in the Hispanic Ministries department! Today Francisco Brito, pastor at Kent Spanish SDA Church, gives insight how well the First Men's Day went!

100 Hispanic gentlemen filled the conference room on August 4 for the first Hispanic Ministries Men's Day! Vidal Mendoza, pastor at Federal Way Spanish Church, delivered a great message for Sabbath emphasizing the influence men have in their families and encouraging them to build a Christ-centered home.

"We were expecting about half of the amount of people that showed up," says Francisco Brito, pastor at Kent Spanish SDA Church. "We had about 100 men in attendance from 80% of our Hispanic Churches! They came with great spirit and motivation to start their ministries in their local churches!"

Hispanic Ministries is continuing to focus on building men's spiritual foundation to empower them to become spiritual leaders in their homes.
