The big picture
Before we go to innovations, let's start with the big picture. Why are forests important again? Trees produce most of the oxygen we need, filter out dust, prevent water pollution, help against floods, reduce noise, etcetera. "If we protect forests we protect our lives."

Plant more trees
We kill the forests. Do the math. Humans are chopping down about 15 billion trees a year and plant about 9 billion. A loss of 6 billion a year. We need more trees.
BioCarbon Engineering developed a drone that first scans the environment, then comes up with the most efficient planting pattern and after that can plant 100.000 trees a day. 360 drone teams could plant the mentioned 6 billion a year.

It can be done lo-tech too
But people can do a lot without expensive technology. Seedballs are a cheap, easy and flexible way of planting lots of new trees. A seed is placed inside a ball of charcoal dust, mixed with nutrients. When the rain arrives the seed begins to grow. It's easy to distribute them from a plane or by hand and they only cost 2 cents per piece. Over 2 million have already been sold.

In all cases: watch the quality
Ok, then you've got your new seeds, but how do you monitor the quality of old and new? With Robin of Israelian company Sensilize for example. It makes unmanned flights with cameras, sensors, data analysis, etcetera possible. Farmers can use it, but it's great to monitor the quality of forests too. And it can be valuable in tackling illegal deforestation.

And change the need to cut trees
It's us humans that are the source of the problem of course. But can you blame people that live in poverty and poor conditions when they cut trees because they need wood charcoal? Of course not. We should look for alternatives. Like the green charcoal in Haiti from Carbon Roots International. With 98% of its forests gone and 9 in 10 Haitians still using wood charcoal to cook, this can make a sustainable difference.

Plus: innovate forestry
We need to find the right balance between things. We need to make sure that we keep enough forests for our health and needs. But there will remain forestry too. Have a look in the movie how forestry innovates withs sensors, data, drones, unmanned trucks, etcetera.
