A Few Chords from the President

The AGM is been and gone, and most of the committee positions have been filled. I would firstly like to thank the 2017-2018 management team, and in particular Liz Crunkhorn for her dedicated work as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer for the past two years, and Garry Collins who did a sterling job of blazing the trail for the new position of Events Manager. Your management team for 2018-2019 is as follows:
President: Max Borchardt
Vice President: Amanda Allwood
Treasurer: Col Grant
Assistant Treasurer: Keryn Henderson
Secretary: Judy Matthews
Media Manager: Jo Kunde
IT Manager: Rob Carlyle
Properties Manager: Blair Marks
                 assisted by Andrew Hunt
Gigmeister: John Henderson
Festival Director: Dave Charles
Events Manager: Geoff Dancer
Thank you to all who nominated. The club as a whole could not run without your contribution. Congratulations also to our 2018 life members, Cath McCourt and John Henderson, who have made outstanding contributions as performers, presenters and committee members to BUMS Inc activities for the past 8-9 years.

Max announces recipients of Life Membership for 2018.

An exciting year lies ahead for BUMS, with a number of events coming up in the next few months, and planning SPRUKE 2019. Check the BUMS Inc website for event details, but I especially want to draw your attention to the Ukulele Cabaret, Look What they’ve Done! at our Coorparoo Bowls Club on Friday 12 October. It promises to be a very exciting night, with local and international talent strutting the stage. Come along with friends, have a simple bite to eat, a glass or two of your drink of choice, and three hours of non-stop entertainment. The meal is included in the price, and drinks will be available at the bar.

Planning for SPRUKE 2019 is already underway. If you are interested in helping in any way, please make yourself known to our Festival Director, Dave Charles. SPRUKE festivals are a great way to meet ukulele performers outside of BUMS, and make friends in the world-wide ukulele community. It’s also a rewarding way to give something back to your ukulele club, and your fellow club members will be very grateful.
Here’s a little Parody for you to ponder as you remember what BUMS does for you ... yes it to the music of “Save the last dance”.

You can strum, Every song you learn
as you take your turn, On a Jamming night

You can sing, All the fancy words
Though they seem absurd, Just get them right!

But don’t forget who’s bringing you Fun, And offering you company
And darling sing the night’s songs with me.

Oh I know, That the rhythms fine,
As I drink more wine, And we sing and strum
Pluck and play with the other guys you’ve met at BUMS

But don’t forget who’s bringing you Fun, And offering you company
And darling sing the night’s songs with me.

You can strum, while you’re here at BUMS, till its time to go
If you’re asked, would you like to see another show
Tell them no
Cause don’t forget who brought you all the stars
In fancy cars, you could want to see
And darling sing your last song with me.

Max Borchardt.

Vale Sadly we say good-bye to a valued member of our ukulele community, Bruce Hooper (Jimmy's cousin). Bruce passed away on Sunday 18 August. Bruce was a member of BUMS Inc from 2011 until 2016 when he was no longer well enough to make the trek from Bribie Island. A talented musician, Bruce was known for his friendly, welcoming personality, and his generosity in helping beginners and sharing his music. He participated in a number of our earlier activities like the Pyjama Walks at Sandgate. Bruce was also a member of SCUM and Bribie Island ukulele groups.

Hope to see you at the next jam.
