Thinking About Race – Witnessing Whiteness by Shelly Tochluk

“As part of the dominant racial group in the United States, white people have generally not been either inspired or forced to question the ways that race has shaped our attitudes, beliefs, and actions.  This limits our freedom.  We don’t recognize our patterns, and therefore we are unable to decide whether or not these patterns are beneficial for our lives and relationships.  Allowing a new vision to challenge ideas developed over the course of our lives is therefore a move toward personal liberation.” (pp. 113-114)

“Let me restate more clearly, the purpose of becoming better witnesses of whiteness is not to ingratiate ourselves with people of color.  This is not about being redeemed or validated.  Instead, people need to be clear that when we can witness whiteness present in our surroundings, we let people know that we can be a part of conversations that most white people generally avoid, defend against, or deny.  We take a step forward in our individual and collective healing process by being more available for deep, honest dialogue.  We enjoy a measure of freedom previously unavailable; we choose how to relate to our whiteness.” (pp 137-138).

From Witnessing Whiteness:  The Need to Talk About Race and How To Do It, by Shelly Tochluk, 2010.  Tochluk, a researcher, counselor and teacher, trains educators to work with the diverse Los Angeles school population as an associate professor of education at Mount St. Mary’s College.

This column is prepared by the BYM Working Group on Racism (WGR) and sent to the designated liaison at each local Meeting.  The BYM WGR meets most months on the third Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Locations vary to allow access to more Friends.  If you would like to attend, on a regular or a drop-in basis, contact clerk David Etheridge, david.etheridge@verizon.net.

WQ 8/18 # 2 Discussion about Meeting for Worship
The clerk reviewed the queries raised about Meeting for Worship at the Quarterly Meeting in May, which had been consolidated into three general topics:
1)      Worship itself
2)      The role of Ministry
3)      The role of Silence

The Meeting shared thoughts about the first topic – Worship itself and what is that about?
·         A way to practice waiting, patience, and listening
·         A spiritual way station
·         A yielding together
·         Holding the space/ the space holding us
·         Feeling the mystery/ feeling the “wonder” without having to work out answers
·         Feeling individual validation “just as I am”
·         Feeling /reinforcing a corporate spiritual core
Recognizing all the qualities above are sensed corporately and not just as individuals

The Clerk asked about after thoughts and joys and concerns. It was the sense of those present that there is a value to holding people in the Light and after thoughts.  The key is how to make the transition from Worship to a different activity.
The suggestion was made that perhaps a Meeting could offer cares and concerns at the beginning of Meeting for Worship.
It was also expressed that sharing after thoughts transforms the Worship into the living world -giving a way to take the sense of Worship into the day to day.

After a brief break, it was the sense of the Meeting that we postpone the other two topics – The role of Ministry, and the role of Silence to a later meeting of the Quarter.

It is important that we decide what we are going to do with Steve Davidson and what to do at the November meeting in Shepherdstown.
The proposed workshop with Steve Davidson (author of the Pendle Hill pamphlet The Gathered Meeting) was discussed.

Because he wanted to do a two to three hour workshop, the idea had been to hold it on the Saturday before our November gathering rather than as part of the business meeting on Sunday.  The question was whether to hold the Saturday workshop at Shepherdstown Meeting, or to hold it at Frederick.

Expressions of gratitude acknowledging the generosity of Shepherdstown were made.  It was the sense of those present to hold the workshop at Frederick Friends Meeting on Saturday, November 17, 2018.  Quarterly Meeting would convene on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018 at Shepherdstown.

A Minute of appreciation was given to Pipe Creek Friends Meeting for hosting the Quarter.

The Meeting closed with silent worship.

Friends of Warrington Meeting will meet the 3rd First Day of the 11th Month of 2018, November 18, 2018 at Shepherdstown Friends Meeting, if so favored

YFM FIELD TRIP TO ARCH STREET MEETING and BARTRAM'S GARDEN
Postponed, date TBD

Join us for a day trip to Philadelphia to visit the beautiful Arch Street Meetinghouse, built in 1803-4. Here are some notes on the tour from the docents:

The West Room Experience: The West Room Experience is a docent led program that provides a great overview of Quakerism as it intertwines with the history at Arch Street Meeting House. It covers many of the most frequently requested topics with time for questions at the conclusion of each program. The West Room Experience is set to be 15- 20 mins in length, but can be adjusted to a shorter length as needed; this is something to let me know about in advance.

East Room Exhibits:   In spring 2017 we debuted an updated diorama exhibition that includes new content as well as new telling of the visitor favorite dioramas. The dioramas and exhibits in the East Room are a self-guided experience where you can take as long or as short of time as you would like.

We plan on leaving around 9:00 am to arrive for our 11:30 tour. Friends will arrange to car pool and should bring a lunch. A sign up sheet will be in the Meetinghouse by the entrance.

To find out more about Arch Street Meeting, visit their website: http://www.historicasmh.org/

Bartram's Garden:
Bartram’s Garden is a 45-acre National Historic Landmark operated by the John Bartram Association in cooperation with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. It is a destination and an outdoor classroom, living laboratory, and membership organization for ever-expanding audiences nearly 40,000 each year and counting.
