Attendance Policy

Waldorf teachers create an unfolding of the curriculum throughout the day, the week, and the year. Because the curriculum is planned so that material will be built upon later in the year and/or following years, it may not be possible to adequately make up missed class time...The benefit of regular attendance begins in the early childhood classrooms and continues through the grades. If a child must take time away from school due to illness or other circumstances, early communication with the Class Teacher is vital. Please notify your child’s teacher and the Receptionist, Anne Marie Pope, (office@waldorfatlanta.org) by 8:00am when your child is absent.

New School Lunch Program Offerings

Grades 1 through 8 only (not offered to Early Childhood students)

WSA is partnering with Chef Mary, from Dinners in a Dash, a local business that provides daily, fresh lunches that are delivered to the school during the week - with the exception of Tuesday's, as our Pizza Fundraiser is on that day.

Lunch offerings will begin Wednesday, September 5th. You can begin placing orders online from August 25th-31st, you will have access to a variety of menus and ordering options at that time.

Chef Mary will be attending Family and Potluck Game Night TONIGHT to provide samples from her menu from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Please contact Chef Mary directly with any questions about how her program will work for WSA. You can reach her at 480-209-6927 or email at dinnersinadash@aol.com

Back to School Family Potluck and Game Night

TONIGHT!

WSA welcomes ALL families and especially NEW families to our Welcome (Back) Family Potluck and Game Night in Hazelwood Hall this Friday, August 24th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Please come and bring a family-size Salad/Veggies or Fruit/Dessert to share for dinner (if you are a NEW family, you need not contribute a dish, our community will provide for you!).  Join our social gathering - get to know other members of our community and enjoy the company of new friends and familiar faces.  Eat, socialize, play games for adults and children.  Feel free to bring a favorite game from home to play and share with friends.

Water will be provided-don’t forget those water bottles! Please consider bringing reusable plates for your family to reduce landfill waste.

There will be cards available for our community to sign and share their gratitude and well wishes for both Ms. Walsh and Ms. Bullard.

Our new partnership for school lunches, with Dinners in A Dash Atlanta, will be providing food samples from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Announcements from the Leadership Team

We would like to address the concern about the mosquitoes around the WSA campus. We use Green Queen for Mosquito Spraying on a weekly basis. This company uses an essential-oil-based, eco-friendly product with no toxic additives. Because Green Queen cares about pollinators and the planet, as do we, they take a conscious and careful approach with their mosquito control services. Their goal is to protect the bees and butterflies while also protecting your family from mosquitoes.

WSA asks for parent support by applying bug spray in the morning prior to drop-off, as the children do spend an ample amount of time outdoors. Please also keep in mind that as the cooler weather comes in, the amount of mosquitoes will begin to dissipate.

Book Lending Libraries

We ask library users, neighbors, and friends to contribute books to maintain our Lending Libraries around WSA's campus. The more people who participate, the better our collection is for our community.

Please be sure to return and/or donate any gently used, Waldorf appropriate (no media characters) books to all three of our Lending Libraries.  This allows our students to enjoy swapping books throughout the school year!

Join us at the Decatur Book Festival

WSA will have a booth at the Decatur Book Festival on Saturday, September 1 from 10am-6pm and on Sunday, September 2 from noon-6pm. We will twist yarn to make bookmarks as an activity - no previous yarn twisting experience is necessary!

The Decatur Book Festival (www.decaturbookfestival.com) is the largest independent book festival in the country and it draws tons of families from our area to downtown Decatur.  We will staff the booth in 2-hour shifts.  Please join us at this wonderful outreach event for our school.

Parent volunteers are needed for 2 hour shifts! Please email Darla Shuman (advancement@waldorfatlanta.org) to sign up or you may visit this link

School Counselor

Job Description

We announced in last week’s Breeze that Silvette Bullard accepted a position at the Galloway School this summer. Until WSA’s School Counselor position is filled, students and parents should contact Ms. Smith, our Educational Support Coordinator, for social-emotional issues and concerns. Ms. Smith has been a Waldorf teacher for more than 15 years, has a degree in psychology and has worked as a social worker at medical and community centers. She also has completed the Waldorf Extra Lesson remedial and therapeutic training.

The School Counselor position is currently posted. Please share this information with anyone who might be interested in joining our faculty. Contact information is on our website.

Working in collaboration with teachers and parents, the School Counselor promotes the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of the students, and intervenes to support a student’s or class’ social-emotional challenges. As a member of the Educational Support Department (ESD), this position provides leadership and coordination for The Waldorf School of Atlanta’s school counseling services and ensures that the school’s policies and procedures reflect current best practices. It includes providing direct and indirect counseling or social-emotional support services to students through one-on-one sessions, small group work, and class meetings.  The School Counselor identifies resources and gives guidance to faculty, staff, and parents as needed, to address and respond to issues relating to student mental health and wellbeing. The School Counselor is a part-time salaried position with a weekly schedule (to be worked out with the Educational Support Coordinator) and may require some after-school/evening meetings.  The Counselor also provides social inclusion/SEL instruction for Early Childhood through Grade 8, in collaboration with the Educational Support Department and the Social Inclusion Coordinating Group, to help students create positive peer relationships and healthy school culture.

WSA School Bus Information

Many of you may know that WSA owns two buses that we use for morning pick-up, class trips, and after-school sports. Unfortunately, we recently found out that one of the buses needs significant repairs. A week ago, the other bus was badly damaged when hit it in our parking lot. Academe of the Oaks, the Waldorf H.S., was kind enough to loan us their bus to start our school year. Since then, we have leased two buses as our Board decides whether we will continue to be bus owners or whether we will just lease buses in the future. Please let Stacey Alston know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Seats are still available on our morning bus route! Pick up locations are to be decided, based on the needs of the students riding. The bus fee for the entire school year for one child is $900, $1,350 for two children, and $1,575 for three or more children.

If you think you might be interested in your child(ren) riding the morning bus, please email or call the Business Office.

Pizza Tuesday

Grades & Middle School

Consider giving your grades/middle school child the gift of fresh, hot Avondale Pizza Cafe pizza every Tuesday through December!  At the same time, you will be supporting a very grateful 8th grade class, who are looking forward to their class trip!  There will be 16 weeks of delivery for the semester, which began on Tuesday, August 21st.  A Gluten free option is also available.  Please pay online at SquareUp and return your order form with payment, if not paid online. Order forms are still being accepted, however, your child's deliveries will start on the following week.  As Pizza Tuesday is a fund raiser, missed dates/orders will not be pro-rated or credited.  Contact Latonia Yarbrough with questions or comments at finance@waldorfatlanta.org.

WSA Grounds Clean-up Day

Saturday, September 8th

Join us for a morning of community as we dig in to make the grounds ready for the new school year. The abundant rain has made for abundant growth over the summer. Our new gardening and grounds team, Miyuki Maruping and Jessie Fair, will lead the way on Saturday, September 8th over four morning shifts starting at 8:00 a.m. to clear areas around the garden and along Oldfield Road. As always, many hands make light work! Please visit this link to sign-up.

For the grounds workday, please come prepared with items to dig in and note those items on the sign-up sheet. Helpful items include shovels, clippers, hedge trimmers – anything to tame the overgrown areas. Also, if you have a flat-bed truck or a BobCat, please let Jessie know at jessiefair2@gmail.com

This will be the first in a series of grounds upkeep days as we make ready for our accreditation visit in late October. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 8th. Don't forget your garden gloves and bug spray!
