Team,

I'm happy to announce that there's been a lot of fruitful activity around our 1st Battalion 3d Marines / Vietnam War  book project.

Recently, I've decided to start using "The Cage" as a placeholder title instead of "Vietnam Story", so if you see "The Cage" in email subjects, you should know it's about this project. "The Cage" refers to Operation Beaver Cage, which was notable among the operations executed by the 1/3 Marines in Vietnam. If not the central focus of the book, it will certainly be an major part.

As a general update, I'm still in the early research phase. I've recently completed about 10 preliminary interviews with various Marines and transcribed those to text. A big thanks goes to Ray "Machine Gun" Kelley for turning up the heat on our project, giving me several contacts, and opening the door with personal introductions. I will be sharing some of that information with you all soon,  but today, I just wanted to share a new concept, which I hope you'll get some value from.

I've decided to start posting some resources that I've been producing or using as research for the book. My idea is that these resources might remain permanent on the Web as companions to the book and as lasting contributions to the historical record.

Today, I present a declassified command chronology from the war, which pertains primarily to Operation Beaver Cage. I spent many hours transcribing the scanned source document so that it could be more legible, hyperlinked, and searchable. Over time, I hope to evolve and enhance the page. For example, I would like to link referenced coordinates to actual geographical maps; wouldn't that would be cool?

Anyway, here's the resource; I hope you enjoy it:

My favorite part of this document, which I think is going to be excellent input into the book, is the Combat After Action Report, which provides a date and time accounting of all things that happened during the operation.

Other  News

The Third Marine Division Association has scheduled, it’s Reunion this year, from September 11th (Tuesday) to September 16th (Sunday), in Colorado Springs, CO. I'll be there with my dad, Alan Burleson. Several participants in the book project will be there also, so we're really looking forward to it. If you want more information about the event, please email or call me.
