EQ: Waiting and Persisting
GENERAL: Occupations
LANGUAGE: Letter Q queen, quilt, quill, quarter
MATHS: Measurement and Ordinal Number

I will be attending the annual NAPTOSA Teacher's conference this weekend in George so please note that I will not be at school on Friday. Teacher Rudo will teach the class.
The children were so proud to get their certificates for achieving their goal of tying a shoe lace. Thank you for helping your child to learn this important skill. The next goal will be skipping with a rope.
Last week I introduced a Group Star Chart.  This is to challenge each group to work quietly and co-operatively. When groups are quiet or tidy their table without assistance they get to put a star next to their group. At the end of the week the winning group will get a reward. I will continue to give each child individual praise and encouragement but I have always found that the Group Star Chart works well at this time of the year.
In our EQ lessons we continued to discuss consequences for behaviour. Most of the children are independent and are able to resolve problems by themselves but a few children still need support. The boys have been very good with their shoes and clothing and are bringing their belongings inside. When children do leave their shoes or clothes lying around the children are quick to remind each other to put their things away.
Mathematics: On Friday we made a graph linked to our theme Occupations. Each child told me what they would like to be when they grow up. They were given counters to put on the chart and we then compared the number of counters for each occupation.  There was a tie between being a fireman and joining the army, as the most popular. One child wanted to be a farmer and another a vet. The most interesting was a designer.
The children thoroughly enjoyed using the scales and tape measures during free play. They were able to compare the length and weight of various toys and objects. This week we will continue with measurement but will also revise ordinal number.
We do the days of the week every day and all the children can recite them in the correct order but they struggle to understand yesterday and tomorrow. They also battle to name days before or after eg " What day comes after Tuesday? What day comes before Friday?" On the way to school, or in the evening before going to bed talk about the days of the week and speak about today, yesterday and tomorrow. Ask them what day comes before/ after...?
Language: Please remember to send pictures or objects to school. The children loved alphabet bingo and had to concentrate and listen or they missed a letter. the winner took great delight in shouting out  "BINGO". When the children have finished their prescribed work they are free to choose other phonics games. It is so good to hear them working together and playing co-operatively.

Starfish

EQ:  Persistence/Resilience
IQ:  Birds
Focus:  Visual Perception
Number Concepts:  Recognition of numbers to 10, Understanding of more/less and equal
We continue this week to discuss "Birds" and "Persistence/Resilience" when trying to achieve our goals.  I am truly proud of my Starfish children for being so persistent when tying their shoelaces.  So far we have 12 children who have learned to tie their shoelaces this term.  My heart is happy when I see the excitement on their face at being able to do it themselves.  Well done to all my parents for the words of encouragement and praise for their children when practicing daily.  Keep it up Starfish children.  Soon the whole class will be able to do it themselves.  Keep practicing even if you can do it, as if you stop practicing you may forget.  Please remember individual goals in the goal box and remember to practice those goals too.
We continue to focus on "Visual Perception" this week.  Play shape games and number games to assist them visually to recognize them.  While reading ask them to find items in the picture.  Play memory games, blocks and Lego too.  Encourage them to spot numbers, shapes and colours in the environment.
Continue to play little number games involving more/less and equal, asking your children, How many more? or How many less?  Start easy as we want them to succeed.  How many sausages on your plate?  How many sausages on dad’s plate?  Who has more?  How many more do they have?
Please remember I am not here this Friday 24 August as I am in George for the Naptosa Teachers Conference.  Teacher Faith and our student Teacher Nicola with be taking the Starfish class for the day.
Please remember our outing to "Lakeside Fire Station" next Tuesday 28th August.  Thank you to all those parents who have offered to help.  Always appreciated!!

Proudly our angelfish kids are trying really hard to do things for themselves in the classroom. Some are trying hard to do it at home too.

We continue to focus on "Visual Perception" this week.  Play shape games and number games to assist them visually to recognize them.  While reading ask them to find items in the picture.  Play memory games, blocks and Lego too.  Encourage them to spot numbers, shapes and colours in the environment.
Last week we played so many number games, completing patterns and matching games. Please try your utmost best to help your child identify numbers 1-10 as  few are still finding it hard to recognize their numbers.
Teacher Monica will be taking the Angelfish class for the day.
The kids have been behaving really well and I have suggested to treat them with a movie on Thursday for our garden day, no treats are needed, will just watch a movie between 10:30 and 11:30
Please remember our outing to "Lakeside Fire Station" next Tuesday 28th August.  Thank you to all those parents who have offered to help.  Always appreciated!!

Hi All
We had a great day last Friday eating and eating and eating!!!!!! The cake sale was delicious and the boerewors was very yummy!!! Thanks for contributing to a wonderful day.
We are extending our vocabulary this week and learning about all the things we wear on rainy days. The children once again are having the opportunity to try on scarves and boots and beanie and having great fun.
We will be encouraging the children to take their own shoes and socks off and jackets if necessary and also to try put them on. We have some very independent little people who are learning so quickly and identifying their belongings and those of others with great excitement.
Hope you all have a super week.

And on that note...

Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.
