Calling all TV and film lovers,

We’re hot off the heels of the fantastic opening weekend for Crazy Rich Asians, a buzzy new film that’s instigated thoughtful (and at times, charged) conversations around what representation means for the Asian community. Eliciting anything from fired up tweets to clickbait headlines to thoughtful musings on capitalism, the film has—perhaps unfairly—become the lightning rod to a broader conundrum of how best to portray the huge, diverse, and global Asian populace onscreen in a way that feels good to everyone.

Tall order, right? By its own merit, I loved Crazy Rich Asians. I cried a lot more than I expected to and I laughed at its campy exuberance. Now I'm looking forward to the next Asian American movie that will show us a totally different perspective. After all, in the world of onscreen representation, more is really is more.

Watch intelligently,

WHAT WE LOVED

Pose

Mediaversity Grade: A 4.94/5

Ryan Murphy’s breakout show Pose centers trans women in the telling of their own beautiful, sometimes tragic, and always brilliant lives. Read the review→

WATCH ON FX

WHAT WE LIKED

Crazy Rich Asians

Mediaversity Grade: B+ 4.33/5

Despite some quibbles, which we discuss in our review, this film is opening doors for at least one segment of the Asian American community with the hopes that more inclusive stories will follow in its resounding wake. Read the review→

WATCH IT IN THEATERS

WHAT WE SIDE-EYED

The Spy Who Dumped Me

Mediaversity Grade: C- 2.75/5

The movie’s fun and generally benign, but I’m still waiting for white feminism to fade into the sunset. Read the review→

AND I DON'T WANNA MISS A THING

We finally reviewed Grey’s Anatomy! It’s not like it’s been on air for fourteen seasons or anything. 😂

The Flash is also a mainstay on our watch list, but man, do they give disabled characters the middle finger in Season 3.

This Is Us, on the other hand, gets better with more complexity in its second season.

And still in theaters, Ant-Man and The Wasp is lovely, light fare that breaks up the dense mythology of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
