Update 5, August 2018

Welcome Ariana Ngaruhe

Ariana has taken over the role of club secretary from Samantha Burling.

Sam has stepped down to concentrate on her role as Senior Club Captain — a role she shares with Tony Garguilio.

The seniors finished their season on a winning note, taking out the NPD Tasman Trophy final after a tough game against Marist. The Bs contribution to the As success was acknowledged at the senior prize giving — the players earning the respect and thanks of the club for their contribution to the As trophy wining season.

The juniors competition finished last weekend. The Goodman 7s showed that rugby in the region has a a promising future. The standard and speed of the games impressed the referees and some impressive ball skills were on display.

Next month the All Blacks play in Nelson. Due to the security protocols before and during the game the area around Trafalgar Park will be sealed off - this includes the club rooms. We will not be able to access the club rooms on the Friday before the game and on game day till half time.

During the off season we be busy, working on the build up to 2020 and the 150th celebration of the first game of rugby ever played between Nelson and Nelson College at the Botanical Reserve in Nelson City. We are keen to get as many "blue-blooded" club members, past players and supporters involved in the club's activities to clebrate this occassion. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested.

Senior News

Congratulations to the players that made the Mako squad. We will be following your progress and cheering you on.

Nelson wins the NPD Tasman Trophy

On Saturday 21/7/2018, in truly appalling conditions, Nelson competed against Marist in the final of the NPD Tasman Trophy. It was a tough game and Nelson emerged the victors (16-6).

With the cup safely locked in the trophy cabinet the team can now reflect on a successful season built on a lot of hard work and real dedication.

Nelson coach Kade Heke said the boys were "absolutely stoked" to take home the championship. "There was a lot of effort from the boys."

A special shout out to the supporters who braved challenging conditions to cheer on the team.

John Goodman 7s

John Goodman always said he bleed blue and the Club was his religion.

As well as a staunch Nelson man John worked to foster and grow rugby in the Nelson region and, in recognition of this contribution to rugby, the Club hosts the Goodman 7s, a 7s tournament for U11, U12 & U13 teams from the region.

Congratulations to the winners

U11s: 1st — Waimea Old Boys, 2nd — Nelson

U12s: 1st — Wanders Blue, 2nd — Motueka

U13s: 1st — Huia, 2nd — Waimea Old Boys

A big shout out to the Nelson U11s who had to front up for double extra time to win their semifinal and finished second in a highly competitive competition.

The day was a great success thanks to the hard work of Quentin and Jo (pictured below). Thanks to the Goodman family, Trish, Jane, Andrew and Max, for helping on the day and presenting the prizes, the volunteers who helped out on the day and the seniors for refereeing the games.
