Last Sunday we celebrated all things kids ministry in our morning services. We had 17 different kids and leaders involved on the day and were blessed with kids talks, sing-a-long memory verses and intergenerational Bible readings. We are blessed to be a part of a church that loves and values kids as disciples and children of God.
A theme that echoed throughout the service came from Mark 10:13-16. In particular, verse 15. "Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
Jesus tells us that we should approach him with the trust and humility of a child. Conventional wisdom tells us that kids should strive to be like adults: independent, self reliant and in control. These are good things and it is essential for kids to become adults, but when it comes to approaching God, we must become like children. We must never feel spiritually independent, self reliant, or in control.
Think about your children. What traits of their faith do you need to emulate?
Imi, my 6 year old daughter is in Kindergarten. There has been some stress navigating the complexities of relationships in the schoolyard. During bed time prayer the other night I asked her how I can pray for her, her answer was "For wisdom with the girls at school." She didn't ask for the problems to go away, she didn't ask for people to be nicer, she didn't ask for an easy out. She asked for wisdom. This is child-like faith! I need to approach God in the same way. Instead of using my own strength to sort out my issues, or begging him for a quick and easy solution to my problems, I should ask for his wisdom.
Your challenge this week: observe the faith of your kids. In what ways do you need to become more like them?
Peace...
