Final Countdown for the Legislative Session

We are nearing the end of session, when bills are rapidly moving through both houses. Now is an important time to call your legislators to support these bills! If time is limited, we are suggesting a priority order below. For more background, and a complete list of bills we are tracking, please follow the links at the bottom of this newsletter. Thank you for using your voice for the tens of thousands who need it.

Senate bills: call your Assembly member.
Assembly bills: for most, call your Senator, however a few are in Assembly at this time.

★SB 1017 (Allen & Wieckowski) - Drift gillnets

SUPPORT: Contact your Assembly member

SB 1017 will create an incentive for the California swordfish fishing industry to transition away from gillnets to the more sustainable deep-set buoy systems by establishing a program to buy back state gillnet permits.

★SB 1249 (Galgiani & Kalra) - Cosmetics testing

SUPPORT: Contact your Assembly member

Animal testing is cruel and unconscionable, especially when it's unnecessary! There are many alternative testing methods for cosmetics.

★SB 1487 (Stern) - Iconic African species

SUPPORT: Contact your Assembly member

Tell your legislator that: Trophy hunting is ethically wrong, and it's at the cost of our vanishing species: African Elephant, Rhinoceros, Lion, Zebras, Hippos, and more.

★AB 2362 (Rubio & Cervantes) - Safe transportation for dogs & cats

SUPPORT: Contact your Assembly member

Tell your legislator that: Animals have suffered severe injury and death from heat exhaustion during transport. This bill will set minimum care standards for shelter and rescue animal transport.

★AB 1884 (Calderon & Bloom) - Plastic straws

SUPPORT: Contact your Assembly member

Tell your legislator that: 175 million plastic straws are discarded per day in the U.S. This bill would require dine-in restaurants to give straws only on customer reques

★SB 1305 (Glazer) - First responders

SUPPORT: Contact your Assembly member

Tell your legislator that: This bill would provide limited immunity to first responders for the provision of basic first aid to dogs and cats. These protections would address any hesitance on the part of EMS providers to provide basic care to dogs and cats in emergency situations.

Emergency Medical Services providers would be exempt from civil or criminal charges for administering first aid to dogs and cats.

★AB 2421 (Mark Stone) - Monarch butterfly & pollinator rescue

SUPPORT: Contact your Senator

Tell your legislator that: Scientists estimate that there is a 72 percent chance the Monarch Butterfly will become extinct in twenty years. Humans rely on a healthy pollinator population for food sources and stable ecosystems. AB 2421 will provide grants to fund much needed restoration projects.

★AB 2528 (Bloom, Kalra) - Climate adaptation

SUPPORT: Contact your Senator

Tell your legislator that: AB 2528 focuses on watersheds that are naturally resilient to climate impacts. The bill would create more climate resilient habitat, and conserve water supplies for all in California.

Tell your legislator that: With federal laws eroding protections for California's coast, we must take any and every action as a state to stop offshore drilling. These bills will prohibit new drilling leases.
