Farewell to summer: here comes autumn!

FALL SEASON PREVIEW

Well that went quickly! As usual, summer passes in a flash but leaves us anticipating the fresh start that September offers. Back to school, back to our routines, and here at BBVE back to Friday evening music! Here's a quick glance at our schedule so far:

SEPTEMBER
21: Kath & Dave
28: BBVE Open Mic Night
OCTOBER:
05: Elaine Lakeman Trio
19: Daniel Cook & The Radiators
26: BBVE Open Mic Night

We'll have more details on these and other events in future newsletters. We have an Open Mic Night Facebook page which provides details on how to participate as a performer. These evenings are a lot of fun and it's a great opportunity to enjoy and support some of the amazing, unsung talent in our community.

Before we bid a final farewell to summer, we want to remind you about a pair of exceptional house concerts featuring touring artists:

AUGUST 23, 8pm: Tom Richardson (Australia)
SEPTEMBER 14, 8pm: Gordie Tentrees (Yukon)

Details on these concerts can be found by scrolling down and tickets are still available for both events as of this writing.

Both these events are co-sponsored by the Brentwood Bay Community Association, who just wrapped up another successful season of Music In The Park and will be presenting Dustin Bentall & Kendel Carson on September 6th as part of the grand opening ceremonies of the recently completed performance stage in Pioneer Park.

Also, a heads-up that tickets for Barney Bentall & The Cariboo Express, the annual fundraiser for the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank, are now on sale through the Mary Winspear box office. There are three shows this year - November 15th/16th/17th. If you've attended this concert in the past you'll know if's pretty much the best musical event of the year. If you haven't been, get your tickets early because it really is fantastic and the cause is most deserving of your support.

We know this is going to be a great autumn season of music and art and we look forward to seeing you here!

THURSDAY AUGUST 23: Australian native Tom Richardson's songwriting, story telling & intricate guitar style is full of the grace, truth and passion evident of an artist whose soul shows signs of unpaved back-roads, with sleeves stained by countless hearts from an ongoing musical odyssey including regular tours through Australia, North America, Asia and Europe.

In the tradition of John Mayer and Jack Johnson, Tom's infectious compositions dovetail quite naturally with the lifestyle of someone who divides his time between Southwest Australia, northern Alberta and Bali: diverse, worldly and full of life. Using little more than a couple of guitars, a mic and looping pedal, Tom effortlessly constructs a rich soundscape, overdubbing vocal harmonies, complicated percussion grooves and lead and rhythm guitar parts, all live on stage.

Advance tickets are $20 including GST. You can purchase tickets in person at the shop or call 778-351-0178 during business hours. Doors open at 7pm. Come early for best seating and enjoy a light meal, snack or dessert with a variety of cool signature summer beverages.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14: Armed with words, acoustic guitar, bottleneck dobro, harmonica, porch board bass and snare tambourine, Yukon road poet and master story teller Gordie Tentrees brings the unexpected to stages across North America, Europe, Australia - and now Brentwood Bay. He has arrived!

Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Gordie is in his words, "the product of a colourful broken home". He found his focus first in sport,  becoming a golden glove boxer and gradually moved from the ring to the stage with stops in between as a school teacher and youth worker, grateful for every moment.

"I feel fortunate to have had such unfortunate moments that have enabled me to become who I am on stage, or off, it's that healthy therapeutic high I was lucky to find. I got to write out my past, let go and define my future all through my songs."

In the early years Fred Eaglesmith took him on the road to Europe/UK and even a historic tour of Route 66 in the US from Chicago to Santa Monica, offering helpful advice and support with an early introduction to the reality of the business of music while encouraging him to make own way. He has since shared the stage with Mary Gauthier, James Cotten, Steve Poltz, Fred Penner, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Kelly Joe Phelps, studying every sound they made on and off the stage making his own noise.

Advance tickets are $20 including GST. You can purchase tickets in person at the shop or call 778-351-0178 during business hours. Doors open at 7pm. Come early for best seating and enjoy a light meal, snack or dessert with a variety of cool signature summer beverages.
