Aug. 31: Beat the Heat, Ride a Bike

August Joy Ride on the 31st!
BikeAthens Hires Program Manager!

Success of the Month

Check Out our Mid-Year Shop Report

Our community-focused programs have always partnered with social service agencies to provide bikes, lights, locks, and helmets to people in need of inexpensive transportation. But we do so much more...

A lot of the community services we provide are somewhat hidden from public view. With this Mid-Year Report, we want to shine a brighter light on the good works of our volunteers and highlight the people we help.  It's a short report, well worth the read!

Links We Like

  1. New Zealand Prime Minister rides bike to get give birth: "The fact that so many of us marveled at Genter’s ride says as much about the gaps society has yet to bridge related to both women and bicycling as it does about her particular gutsiness. If the right supports are in place—as they often are for men—having a child does not need to diminish a woman’s ability to steward a country, a company, or her chosen life path."

  • A Red Schwinn from Western Auto.

Best bike related memory?

  • Pleasure Riding as an Adult : Bike riding with our family on Mackinac Island Michigan. There are no privately owned cars allowed on the island.
  • First Wild Ride as a Child : I don't recall this, but my mother told me that when I was three I rode my tricycle down the dozen steps to the basement and landed right side up.

Advocacy Corner

We recently wrote about how  much we love the recommendations for a protected bike lane / cycle track on the southeast side Barnett Shoals. We also expressed fear that the Mayor & Commission would not support the project. Our fears are becoming a reality. Some commissioners are unwilling to even try the protected bike lane on a temporary basis. If you want to see a protected bike lane on Barnett Shoals, please write your commissioner a quick and courteous note!
