2018 Diversity Workshop Inspires Students and Young Professionals

On Saturday, July 14, eighty-three multicultural students and young professionals from across the United States joined APSIA for a workshop to inspire them to seek out the field of international affairs.

Farah Pandith, former Special Representative to Muslim Communities for the US Department of State and Fletcher Alumna, opened the day with a keynote address stressing the need to treat everyone with dignity and kindness.

Ms. Pandith reflected on her own career and emphasized the need to cultivate an expertise on key issues. She also stressed the need to “articulate your analysis so that people will hear it” without letting emotions rule the day (even if you feel frustrated or disheartened).

YONSEI UNIVERSITY

GRADUATE SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Yonsei University was founded in 1885 and is the oldest private university in Korea. Ever since its beginnings, Yonsei has been at the forefront of higher education in Korea. Yonsei’s establishment coincided with Korea’s initial forays into the modern international system and since then, it has played a vital role as a gateway for multicultural and multinational exchanges. Its pioneering role as a conduit of knowledge flowing in and out of Korea continues to be a hallmark of its educational philosophy.

The Graduate School of International Studies lies at the center of Yonsei’s commitment to internationalization and education of global leaders. The GSIS was established in 1987 as the first professional school dedicated exclusively to international studies in Korea. For the past twenty plus years, the GSIS has grown immensely. International students from more than 50 countries provide a unique multicultural learning environment where diversity is not just a slogan but an enduring feature of the school’s globalized student culture.

Dual degree and exchange programs with key partner institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia, in addition to a variety of international internship programs, enable GSIS students to emerge into the job market with enhanced skills and tailored international experiences. These programs include: Master of Arts in Korean Studies; Master of Global Economy & Strategy, Master of Global Affairs & Policy; Ph.D. in Korean Studies; Ph.D. in International Studies; Ph.D. in International Political Economy; and Ph.D. in Strategy & Organization.

As the first program in Korea, the GSIS remains even more committed to its core mission of educating and training a "Global Corps" or leaders who transform themselves so that they can transform the world.
