the sweetheart of all tomatoes - sungolds!
In the busiest of our months, we have arranged to make ourselves busier than usual with a bunch of meaningful/delightful/exciting events.

One was our farm tour and potluck last Saturday- the weather was perfect (No rain! No lightening! No sweltering heat!) and the company was great! We set up all the market tents with tables and chairs beneath them, lit them with Christmas lights, and shared really really really great food with the 50 or so folks that were there. It was delight, and we’ll do it again in October.

Another event happens tomorrow- a University of Maryland agriculture education bus tour will come by to see our farm and see how we do things. Sharing information with fellow farmers/aspiring farmers is something we feel passionate about, so the time will be made for it!

And lastly, Farmer Jess will be joining other guests on Radio Times with host Marty Moss-Coane, on WHYY this Thursday from 10am-11am. I know that locally, the show is on the station 90.9 FM. The subject? Farming of course! See if you can tune in! I'm not forgetting to feel thankful for the other eight farmers who are making it possible for this to happen by keeping the business of growing things running smoothly in the meantime.

All of that is in addition to seeding and planting and watering in an acre and a half of fall crops, removing old planting space to make room for cover crops, hosting a tomato gleaning event with Rolling Harvest Food Rescue that directed 3,000 pounds of tomatoes to the food insecure,  plus harvesting all the winter squash, getting the 2019 strawberry plants rooted in the greenhouse, cleaning up our various chaotic messes for all the above tours, harvesting thousands of pounds of food for our seven weekly markets, and doing it while not murdering one another(with steely glances or otherwise) in the heat, heaviness, and discomfort of farming in Jersey August.

All that is to say we’re winning. Busy as anything but still saying yes to the things that feed our souls. Farming is hard, the season is a marathon, and the crew here at Chickadee Creek is winning it. When you see your farmers at markets this week, give ‘em a big smile, and they’ll give you a somewhat weary one back. They’re doing great work.
Eat well!
