August and looking ahead...

Well time flies and we are nearly into September, but before we look ahead to Autumn check out the pictures below of our medieval stitching retreat and my little foray into the world of book making!

Jonathan and I are planning a few weeks 'off' from next week but all orders will go at as usual unless it says otherwise on the website (we might sneak away for a few days!) so check out our shop for some new items and don't forgot, free postage to all UK orders over £40 and prompt dispatch of all orders wherever you are in the world.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the summer!
Medieval Embroidery at Coombe Abbey

For all of those who came on the stitching retreat at Coombe Abbey last week, Angela and I hope you had a good time! The hotel was certainly a great venue to send us back in time to the medieval period for our two day project on the Opus Anglicanum medieval embroidery technique. Our classroom looked out on to the wonderful gardens and you can see Angela demonstrating on the big screen (see above right).

Display of our embroidery

We try to choose interesting venues relevant to the subject we are teaching and our next one is no exception; join us in November for afternoon tea at the famous Bettys Cafe and Tearoom at Harrogate, oh and some stitching too! If you are heading up for the fabulous Knitting and Stitching show that week then come up a day early and join us for a teatime themed project covering techniques including applique, goldwork and hand stitching.

Date:
21st November 2018 - A stitching tea at Bettys tearoom, Harrogate

Miniature book making in Oxford

I had the opportunity to spend a day at the Western Library in Oxford making miniature books this month! It's always good to go to a class and learn something a bit different; you never know how it will feed into your own work. It's good to see how someone else teaches too, and Mark of Studio5 Book Binding Arts was a fantastic teacher!

The class was based on a mini exhibition on at the Bodleian Library in Oxford, 'Curious Cabinets'; a collection of miniature children's books. The exhibition is on for another week so if you are in Oxford pop you head in the library and have a look at these beautiful little objects:

I'm already making 'cabinets' for my tiny little sketchbooks!

While I was in Oxford I also spent a good few hours in the fabulous Pitt Rivers Museum of Natural History. With half a million objects to view it was a amazing I stumbled across this beautiful embroidery:
