Dr. Joseph E. Aoun, Author of ‘Robot-Proof,’ Keynote Speaker
at UEDA Annual Summit

Presentation offers blueprint for preparing a workforce
for a world of artificial intelligence

MILWAUKEE, WI – August 22, 2018 – The University Economic Development Association’s (UEDA) 2018 Annual Summit centers around the theme of disruptive economic development and higher education as an engine for regional growth. As regional economies are constantly challenged, these ecosystems need to be adaptable to changing forces (both internal and external forces) to experience success and resilience. By disrupting the normal trends of economic development, regions become more agile to these forces and can realize greater long-term, sustainable growth.

The keynote speaker at this year’s summit, Dr. Joseph E. Aoun, president of Northeastern University and author of Robot-Proof: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, will advance the discussion of one of the largest looming disruptions our economy faces—artificial intelligence. Aoun will share his perspective on how higher education institutions can prepare a workforce for a world inundated with artificial intelligence.

“Smart machines are getting smarter and as they begin to surpass human performance, the implications for our economy and society are enormous,” said Aoun. “For higher education to stay relevant, we will need to change what and how we teach. By moving lifelong learning to the center of our mission, universities can deliver the customized, personalized, and on-demand programs learners need to succeed in the age of artificial intelligence.”

Aoun, an internationally respected voice on experiential education, received his Ph.D. in linguistics and philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and advanced degrees from the University of Paris (France) VIII and Saint Joseph University (Beirut, Lebanon). He was named a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques (Knight of the Order of the Academic Palms) by the French government and is a recipient of the Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Academic Leadership Award. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a past Chair of the American Council on Education.

“This is a can’t-miss opportunity for anyone in higher education who wants to prepare their institution for the coming era. Robotics and smart technology are part of every conversation about the future of work and economic development across every industry, and we are lucky enough to feature an address with Dr. Aoun, who is one of most knowledgeable modern minds on this topic,” said Tim Hindes, UEDA executive director.

This year’s summit will be held in Milwaukee, WI from October 20-24. Learn more about Dr. Aoun’s keynote address and the rest of the summit agenda at http://www.UEDAAnnualSummit.org.
