Making a Splash in

Lake Tahoe

In early August, classic wooden boats of all shapes and sizes take over Obexer's Boat Company in Lake Tahoe for the annual Concours d'Elegance. Here's a small sampling of the Chris-Crafts and Gar Woods in attendance.
If the word “Concours” makes you think of large hats, manicured fairways and multi-million dollar classic cars, you're not alone. As hot rod and custom car aficionados, we’ve strolled several historic golf courses—including a particularly memorable one down the California coast—admiring some of the world’s finest machines. These specialty events have become a tradition in and of themselves; they set standards for craftsmanship and showcase the rarest of the rare. With that in mind, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to attend a different kind of Concours earlier this month—the Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance.

Now in its 46th year, the show brings more than 50 of the country’s best vintage boats to Tahoe’s scenic Western Shore for an unforgettable weekend. We covered the 45th running of the Concours in our “Hot Rods Aquatic” article in TRJ #77, and with warm weather on the horizon, we were excited to make the return trip east to see what this summer’s show was all about.

Mary Bryte and Nancy Johnson's 1939 Chris-Craft Special Runabout has been a Tahoe boat its entire life. Dubbed "Mary Bryte," the beautiful 22-footer is powered by a pair of Chrysler inline sixes and is one of eight of its kind left in existence.
When it comes to vintage boats, 1955 Chris-Craft Cobras are as hot as they come. Bob and Paula Boldt's "007" features a blown early Hemi and plenty of hot rod elements, from the Paxton-blown early Hemi and wraparound windshield to the fiberglass bodywork. Only 108 of these were made—one of which ended up with the "Golden Sahara" in the late Jim Skonzakes' collection.
There's no question that these boats were built to be used. What could be better than hitting the lake with your pals in a restored vintage Chris-Craft?
