Campaign Update: Annual Meeting Invitation!

You are invited to our 2018 Annual Meeting at the Sierra Club on October 24th.

We're excited to have Jules Bailey coming to give us an update on OBRC's activities, including opening BottleDrop centers around the state and adjusting to the 2018 bottle bill expansion.

We'll give a progress report on our BYOC campaign, and speakers from Thatcher's Coffee in Vancouver will share insights on waste reduction practices from a coffee shop's perspective (see BYOC Spotlight for more about Thatcher's Coffee).

As always we'll provide snacks and drinks, and all of our members and supporters are welcome. More information to follow, so stay tuned!

BYOC Spotlight: Thatcher's Coffee

Serving coffee is what they do at Thatcher’s Coffee, and caring for people (and the planet) is why they do it. Enter this bright, modern shop in the Grand Central District of Vancouver and you will be greeted by a light, airy sun-filled space featuring gleaming concrete floors, tile and natural woods. A colossal and colorful blackboard asks you to consider your intentions for 2018, and then share them in writing!

Opened eight years ago by Jamie Erdman, Thatcher’s features excellent coffee and pastries. Thatcher’s quickly became a popular local shop when their coffee drinks made with Roseline or Heart coffee were discovered. Order “for here” and your food and beverages will be served on or in durable ceramics.Tempting pastries are made from locally sourced ingredients. Bring your own travel mug for “to-go” and receive a discount.

Do Just One Thing: Give Old Shoes New Life

According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, Americans throw “away” over 300 million pairs of shoes each year. These shoes end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose.

If you have gently used shoes, you might consider donating them to Goodwill or to the Salvation Army.

Another option for doing some global good is by donating gently used shoes or clothing comes through a partnership between Zappos and Tennesse based Soles4Souls, which has collected more than 30 million pairs of shoes since 2006 and distributed them to children in need from 127 countries. Soles4Souls accepts all types of shoes, even flip-flops and dance shoes, as long as they are new or gently worn. Zappos provides free shipping for up to 50 pounds of new or gently used shoes or clothing! Here’s a link to the Zappos site. https://www.zappos.com/zapposforgood/soles4souls.

If your athletic shoes are just plain worn-out, you have a wonderful local option of recycling them with Nike. Nike has had a Reuse-A-Shoe program since the 1990s in which they have collected worn-out athletic shoes and salvaged materials to make Nike Grind, which is composed of nearly every part of an old running shoe: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric from the upper. Nike Grind also contains pre-consumer material, including manufacturing scraps and shoes with manufacturing defects.

“The recycled shoes are given new life,” says Simon Lofts, director of Nike Inc. Sustainable Business & Innovation. “They are reborn into sports and playground surfaces around the world.” These surfaces range from neighborhood playgrounds to professional athletic surfaces for the NFL and MLB.

Division Clinton Street Fair

The Division Clinton Street Fair was a lively affair! The RA crew joined in the parade, connected with lots of people to talk about our organization and recycling issues, and collected many new pledges to "Bring Your Own Cup".

Our thanks to volunteers Bill Crawford and family, Marie Robes, Carolina de Aguiar Martins and Cheyenne Cleeton. Also a special shout-out to board member Bonita Davis for spearheading RA's participation in the event.
