September 2018 News
From the Directors:

As we enter into another promising academic year and welcome a fresh cohort of medical students and residents, we can be sure this year will be heightened by the excitement of being the first tuition-free medical school in the country. So many of the innovations introduced at NYU Langone depend upon the commitment, effort and dedication of our faculty - from the admissions process through undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. While the Educator Community looks forward to featuring the many people and programs that set us apart and contribute to our national reputation and success, teams across the institution are looking to develop collaborative programming to advance the education mission even further. This includes skill development in teaching and assessment; promoting educational innovation, leadership and scholarship; and enhancing recognition both internally and externally.

You will hear more about these efforts in future editions of the newsletter. In the meantime, join us for our first Medical Education Grand Rounds on September 18th at 8am with Eric Warm, MD from the University of Cincinnati Health. Registration is also open for the Third Annual Medical Education Innovations and Scholarship Day on November 28th where we have the privilege of hosting George Thibault, MD as this year’s keynote speaker. More information to follow on the interactive sessions that will be facilitated by our esteemed colleagues here at NYU.

We look forward to building this community with you and invite your partnership as contributors, participants, leaders, and above all champions.

Crystal Mainiero, MPA and Michael Poles, MD, PhD

Updates on Pre-Clinical Education
The Office of Medical Education, as it does each year, has examined the pre-clerkship curriculum looking for areas of improvement. This year, the Stage 1 curriculum that includes the first eighteen months of medical school, will be renamed the Science and Skills of Medicine. This is to ensure that students have a better understanding of the connection between stages and how the basic sciences are foundational to clinical medicine.  In addition, the students’ Core Foundations of Medicine (CFM) course has been restructured, breaking it into two separate but related modules: DNA, Organelles and Cells (DOCs) and Infection and Immunity. Lastly, the Core Principles of Medicine (CPM) modules were renamed for the organ system being studied, such as Stage-1 Cardiology, Stage-1 Pulmonology, etc. Though these changes may seem cosmetic, we believe that they will serve to better define the vital link between molecular and clinical education. In addition, each lecture, seminar, conference and exam is being reviewed and modified as necessary to ensure that our top-echelon students receive a top echelon education.

As these technologies become more affordable, we can begin to realize the potential of immersive computing which uses both our bodies and senses to control computers and applications, reduces barriers to mastering spatial relations in three dimensions, expands data visualization techniques, and offers on-demand simulation possibilities. CME credits available and a certificate will be presented upon successful completion of the course.
