Second Muslim American Woman Set to Become a Member of Congress

Minnesota state representative, Ilhan Omar, won the Democratic primary for Minnesota's 5th congressional district, currently represented by Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim American in Congress. Omar, a former Somali refugee, immigrated to the United States as a teenager. While Omar will have a Republican challenger, Jennifer Zielinski, in the general election, she is projected to win in a district considered safe for Democrats.

Legislative Updates

Sen. Elizabeth Warren unveils a new plan to reshape American capitalism. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) introduced S. 3348, the Accountable Capitalism Act, on Wednesday. Among many proposals, the bill would require large corporations with annual revenues over $1 billion to acquire a corporate charter from the federal government mandating them to consider the interests of all major company stakeholders beyond shareholders including workers, customers, and the cities and towns where they operate. Despite the bill's many pro-worker proposals, critics see the legislation as excessive governmental control.

Senate passes sweeping defense and domestic spending bill. A week after Trump signed the NDAA into law, the Senate passed, in a 85-7 vote, a massive $854 billion spending bill funding the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, Education, and Defense, which would receive $675 billion of the appropriation.  While the bipartisan spirit in the Senate is a promising step towards avoiding a government shutdown, the bill still needs to be reconciled with the House version once Representatives return from recess and signed into law by the September 30 deadline.

Warren wages war on corruption with (another) bill. It was a busy week for Senator Warren (D-MA) who introduced another bill, S. 3357, the Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Act. This bill proposed several anti-corruption reforms including 1) requiring presidential and vice presidential candidates to disclose 8 years worth of tax returns and 2) prohibiting presidents, vice presidents, Cabinet members, and members of Congress from become lobbyists. It would also reform the rulemaking process to try and minimize corporate influence in federal agencies and create a new Office of Public Integrity to investigate any ethics violations within the federal government.

Hill Events

Senators Begin to Meet with Kavanaugh

Ahead of the September 4 confirmation hearing, both Republican and Democrat senators have started meeting individually with Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, as part of their vetting process. Kavanaugh has already met with Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AL), Susan Collins (R-ME), Dick Durbin (D-IL), and Chris Coons (D-DE). Several Democrats have canceled their meeting with Kavanaugh and propose the confirmation hearing be delayed after Michael Cohen's guilty plea implicated the President's involvement in a hush money scheme.
