Energypedia is happy to welcome its new partner, LEDsafari. We will work with LEDsafari on promoting knowledge creation and sharing on solar topics.
LEDsafari is based in Switzerland and develops innovative digital products to help solar companies in developing countries. LEDsafari’s flagship product, an online training platform (HelioLearn©) uses unique pedagogy and easy to understand content, which makes it easy to train people with low technical background on PV technologies. Welcome our New Intern: Ahmed Noaman El-Sherbini

Ahmed, our new intern, will assist us with the daily maintenance of the energypedia platform. He is currently studying Environmental and Resource Management at the Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg. He is interested in the relationship between socio-economic energy needs of small communities and suitable renewable energy technologies to meet those needs. Myanmar has the Lowest Access to Electricity in Southeast Asia

About 70 percent of the households in Myanmar get electricity for only about 2 hours per day and stand at Tier 1, according to the World Bank’s Multi-Tier Framework (MTF) survey. The Myanmar Government supplies electricity via the power grid and solar power systems. The power grid is highly unreliable and since the users have to pay 10 percent of the cost of installing the solar systems, many cannot afford it. Read more...

USD 25.44 Million to Promote Solar-Powered Irrigation in Bangladesh

The Asian Development Bank has granted USD 25.44 million to promote off-grid solar photovoltaic (SPV) for irrigation in Bangladesh. This fund will support the installation of at least 2,000 SPV pumps. It will also lower the high upfront cost of using SPV and make them more accessible. By replacing diesel pumps with solar, this project aims to reduce 17,261 tons of carbon dioxide annually. Read more…

Indonesian Government to Issue Regulations for Rooftop Solar Panels

The Indonesian Government is planning to issue regulations that allow users to sell unused electricity from their rooftop solar to the state-owned corporation. The users can sell up to 90% of the generated electricity and will receive a regulated price. This is an effort to align with Electricity 4.0; the power production is not dominated by state-owned as well as major companies and the consumers also act as prosumers. Read more…

Campaign to Reduce Charcoal Use in Somaliland

The Somaliland Government, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme, has launched a public campaign to raise awareness about deforestation, charcoal production, and ecosystem damage. The Government also issued a communique to implement conservation laws as well as policies and called for increased cooperation between different actors. Read more…

World Bank Exceeds its Climate Finance Target

In 2015, the World Bank had set a target of ensuring that 28% of its investment will be climate-related by 2020. It has managed to exceed its target already in 2018, where 32.1 percent of its financing had climate co-benefits. This is equivalent to USD 20.5 billion that was invested in climate-related finance and over USD 10 billion on clean energy finance. Read more…

This dataset contains new data on household electrification rates for 124 non-OECD countries. Some of the datasets go back to 1960 and in most cases, the data cover rural, urban and aggregate electrification rates. The dataset is freely available. Read more...

Productive Use of Energy – Pathway to Development? Reviewing the Outcomes and Impacts of Small-scale Energy Projects in the Global South

This study from WISIONs analyses the results of an impact evaluation of 30 small-scale energy development projects to better understand whether and how the supply of sustainable energy services supports productive use activities and whether these activities have the expected positive impacts on local livelihoods. The results show that access to energy does not automatically result in productive activities and is only one of the input factors required to foster socio-economic development. Read more…
