AMBASSADOR UPDATES

iGEM recently welcomed a team of Ambassadors made up of 11 passionate After iGEMers spanning 6 continents. Our goal is to promote After iGEM initiatives in all regions. Keep scrolling to learn what the ambassadors have been working on this month.

In July and August, the ambassadors have been cooking up some exciting new projects. From tracking down interviews with iGEM alumni for the iGEM digest, developing and monitoring the mentorship program, working to gather materials for the new educational hub to planning after iGEM events all over the world.

iGEM WORLD NEWS

"Have you ever wanted to be in the room where it happens? After iGEM gave me that chance."

"At the Meeting of States Party to the Bioweapons Convention last December, I saw that sometimes those systems reduce to a sea of faces, sitting together in one room. I went into the MSP without knowing much about how international governance plays out in practice. It was heartening to see delegates from all over the world manage to weave together an agreement despite competing concerns, especially knowing that no consensus could be reached at the 2016 meeting."

From Lab to Runway with Stella McCarney

Jim Ajioka, iGEM '09, along with Colorfix co-founders, David Nugent and Orr Yarkoni have taken their pigment generating clones from the lab of their 2009 iGEM Cambridge Team to the Stella McCartney runway to the fashion exhibit at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Congratulations to this accomplished After iGEMer and his partners!
Brazilian Synbio Hackathon

The Brazilian After iGEM Community, in partnership with LiNA Biotec, hosted the Biohack, a remarkable event that guided newcomers in the field from brainstorming to a business plan.

iGEMers at Synbiobeta

SynBioBeta was founded by iGEMer, John Cumbers.

Over the years, SynBioBeta has built a great hub of synthetic biology practitioners, entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors who share a passion for engineering biology and entrepreneurship.

Join us and experience iGEM at SynBioBeta through iGEM Executive VP Meagan Lizarazo as a featured speaker, at the iGEM exhibitor booth (see below for an opportunity to represent iGEM), or at the special After iGEM Reception at SynBioBeta to catch up with your fellow iGEMers.

JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Should citizens "brew" their own medicine?

Four Thieves Vinegar, a group that gives individuals the tools to make their own medicine, were recently described as a "network of anarchists and hackers developing DIY medical technologies" by the MOTHERBOARD.
- "Meet the Anarchists Making Their Own Medicine" July 26, 2018. Vice, MOTHERBOARD

What potential impact could there be from citizen scientists taking manufacturing into their own hands? Are you for or against? Is regulation possible, or even desirable? Discuss on After iGEM's group section.
Franken food fight

In a laboratory in Minneapolis, a tiny company called Calyxt is developing a soybean plant that will produce a healthier oil. Calyxt a company that has never turned a profit is poised to beat the world’s biggest agriculture firms. Their soybean is set to be the first gene edited crop. Such advances in gene-editing could double the $15 billion global biotechnology seed market within a decade.

Let’s discuss how genetic engineering is turning the agriculture industry upside down. Whatever your thoughts are, feel free to share those and any news on After iGEM's group section.
