Late summer - and the grasses have really come into their own this month. There is such a variety of shapes and sizes - but, above all, it is that sense of movement that grasses give to a garden.
See below for our selection of some grasses looking good now.
If you're looking for a bit more colour, we've also picked out a few perennials for the late summer border.

Panicum virgatum 'Warrior'
A lovely 'soft' grass with waving sprays of ruby red flowerheads at just the right height for running through your hand - it's difficult to resist. Red autumn tints from August onwards make this a really useful grass for a mixed border.

Molinia 'Liebreiz'
We hold the National Plant Collection® of Molinia (Purple Moor Grass), and this is a new variety for us that has come from the continent. It looks like it's going to be big!
Strong flower stems shoot upwards to 2.1m, topped with large open 'see-through' panicles of flower. What might have felt imposing at this height, is, instead, a living, moving screen. Lovely yellow autumn colour.

Miscanthus sinensis
'Positano'
'Positano' has been really catching people's eye on the sales area this month. Large silky flower plumes open a shining claret red on strong stems to 2.1m. As with all Miscanthus, these will turn buff as they age, but stay looking good all winter until cut down to the ground in the spring.

Tritonia disticha
ssp. rubrolucens
A beautiful South African bulb, which soon makes a good patch in a sunny spot. Dainty warm pink flowers on wiry stems above grassy foilage. Looks lovely with a blue Aster such as A. 'Lutetia' or Galatella (Aster) sedifolia.

Salvia microphylla
var. neurepia
We've had this plant since the late 1980s and continue to grow it because, despite all the new varieties, it's still a really good plant. Clean scarlet flowers and small leaves make it a refined plant for a sheltered sunny position.

Begonia grandis
ssp. holostyla
'Nanjiang Silver'
Begonia grandis is a truly hardy Begonia for planting in a shady border in the garden. Plants to 60cm high will be dripping with pink flowers from August to the first frosts. 'Nanjiang Silver' is a beautiful new form.

Crocosmia pottsii
'Culzean Pink'
A distinctive colour within the world of Crocosmia, this may not be really pink, but it's not orange either - peach? A soft glowing colour that looks good in the border with grasses and Asters.
