Ready for Swim Team?

I get a lot of parents asking me when I think their child will be ready to join the JMSS Marlin developmental swim team.  The team practices on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings 6 - 7 pm and Saturdays 8:30 - 9:30 am in the 25 yard course “big” pool.  The first thing I ask is what level of swim class is their swimmer currently in. If it is Swordfish III or above my answer is “yes” if they can demonstrate swimming one length of the pool in side breathing Freestyle and Backstroke.  There are a lot of kids who just love to swim and have mastered all the JMSS advancement skills through our Swordfish V level. They just want to keep swimming for fun, fitness and the camaraderie they receive swimming with a great group of kids.  As a parent, you want your kids to stay physically active and have fun doing it. That’s where a pre-competitive swim program comes in and the perfect place to start is the Marlin developmental swim team.

I have designed the program so each of the 4 lanes are working on the advancement standards of Swordfish 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.  For example Lane 8, our beginner lane, is geared towards teaching the Swordfish 3 Breaststroke basics and Lane 9 Butterfly basics of Swordfish 4.  Lanes 10 & 11 focus on advanced skills of Swordfish 5, 6 & 7 such as; refining stroke technique with drills, legal turns for all four strokes, Freestyle flip turn, increasing endurance and becoming a stronger swimmer.  I want all our JMSS swimmers to learn what it means to work hard AND have fun; I want them to learn the value of a healthy lifestyle and have a lifetime sport they can practice into their adult years.

If your child loves to swim or seems interested in taking the next step, talk to me or one of our coaches and let us explore the option to join the JMSS Marlin developmental swim team.

See you around the pool!

Coach Jim

JMSS Sailfish Completes Inaugural USA Swim Season!

JMSS formed a new USA swim team this past season (the USA Swimming season runs a consecutive 12 months September 1st through August 31st). The formation of the JMSS Sailfish USA team is an outgrowth of three existing JMSS programs, the Summer Swim Team, the Year round Marlins Developmental Swim League, and the Swordfish level swim lessons.  In addition, swimmers new to JMSS also joined the team.

In total, 20 swimmers practiced beginning in September 2017 through July 2018 and competed in USA Swimming sanctioned meets.  Like many of our other, the emphasis is on having fun while learning and developing into a competitive swimmer.  The team provides an energetic, focused environment for swimmers to practice and learn proper competitive swimming techniques, acquire suitable swim training practices, and participate in the benefits of joining and contributing to a team.  Meets are approximately every 4-6 weeks and times are tracked and categorized by the USA Swimming National Organization.

Recruiting is underway for our second season which begins Tuesday, September 4, 2018.  If you are interested in joining or learning more about the team, please visit the Sailfish webpage or you may contact Head Swim Coach, Judy Steiner at judy@jmswim.com

Summer League Swim Team

The JMSS Summer Swim Team program for 2018 was a huge success! Running from May 29th through July 9th, practices were held four times a week with a swim meet every Monday. This year we had 51 swimmers on the team as well as 3 coaches. The kids did really well throughout the season with everyone making at least one “best time” at our championship meet! We capped off the season with a swim party at our pool where we played games, had pizza and snacks, and gave awards to all the swimmers. Overall we had a great season and loads of FUN!

Please remember that all students must check in with the front desk prior to swim class at JMSS. They will be given a bracelet (except for swim team or parent/child levels) and are required to bring that bracelet with them to their class.  ~  Thank you
