40 Days of Summer 2018 a Success!

40 Days of Summer this year was a tremendous success! We fed a lot of kids healthy, delicious snacks and lunches - 111 kids from 75 families were fed 866 lunches over 8 weeks, to be exact. We had some very exciting programming, including scavenger hunts, bottle rocket launchers, kite-making, lots of art, slime-making, Harry Potter-themed activities, science experiments, and more. We are extremely grateful to our presenters:

  • Chewonki Foundation
  • Midcoast Music Academy
  • Northern Stars Planetarium
  • Maine State Library STEM specialist Chris Dorman
  • Amy Shepard
  • Maine State Beekeepers Jean Vose and Peter Lammert
  • Pope Memorial Animal Shelter
  • Bottle rocket specialists Ted Mahler & William Dashiell
  • Sparks' Ark
  • Coast Guard crews from Abbie Burgess, Rockland Station, Tackle, Thunder Bay, and Air Station Cape Cod

We owe special thanks to Michael Bollinger, one of our 40 Days parents but also the commanding officer of the USCG Abbie Burgess, for facilitating all of the Coast Guard events this summer!

40 Days of Summer is generously supported by several grants, as well as donations from community organizations and private individuals. We are also indebted to everyone who donated their time and energy to make the program possible, including our amazing volunteers who helped cover the library's circulation desk while our staff ran the activities:

  • Paula Michaud
  • Ann Robison
  • Mimi Zwick
  • Andi Isaacs
  • Judy Riff

We're finished with 40 Days of Summer 2018 but already are looking ahead to our sixth year of 40 Days in 2019! If you or someone you know would be interested in introducing a fun skill or interest to a new generation of kids from ages 6 to 14, please contact us! We love to have community members engage with the 40 Days of Summer kids with hands-on activities. It's also time to start raising funds for next year's program, so....

Save the Date for our FALL FEAST!

On October 13th, from 11 am to 1 pm, the Friends of the Thomaston Public Library will be hosting a bargain book and food extravaganza in our gazebo (in case of inclement weather, we will move in to the gym). Various chilis, chowders, and apple crisp a la mode, as well as cider and hot chocolate, will be for sale along with amazing book deals! More details to come, and funds raised will go towards 40 Days of Summer 2019.

Upcoming Events

September 3: Library Closed for Labor Day

September 10: Family Movie & Pizza Night

Join us on Monday, September 10 at 5:00 pm for our Family Movie & Pizza Night! Free and open to all, and pajamas always welcome. This month, we are excited to show staff favorite Big Hero 6 from Walt Disney Pictures!

Big Hero 6 is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius-thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion - a robot named Baymax - and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.

All films are shown with closed captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing.

If you can't make it this month, stay tuned for next month on October 15th - just in time to get us all ready for Halloween, we'll be showing Hotel Transylvania!

September 11: Let's Talk About It Book Club

Funded by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council and facilitated by author and mentor Lee Heffner, the Let's Talk About It book group will meet on Tuesday, September 11 at 11 am. We continue the series, "Becoming American: Struggles, Successes, and Symbols," with Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin.

From the publisher: "'Mountain,' Baldwin said, 'is the book I had to write if I was ever going to write anything else.' Go Tell It On The Mountain, first published in 1953, is Baldwin's first major work, a novel that has established itself as an American classic. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle of self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves."

These discussions are always thought-provoking and lively, and we welcome anyone to join for one book or the whole series!  Refreshments are served.

The next book in the series to be discussed will be An Orphan in History by Paul Cowan, and copies are available at the library. For questions or additional information call us at 354-2453 or check on our social media sites.

September 18: Intergenerational Book Club

On Tuesday September 18th at 2:30 pm the Thomaston Intergenerational Book Club will meet to discuss The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.

In this novel Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia after four harrowing years on the Western Front and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together at the library to share their opinions and ideas about the selected book. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on September 18th at 2:30  p.m.   If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

October's IGBC selection is Anne of Green Gables, by L. M. Montgomery. Copies will be available to borrow at the library.

September 21: Communi-TEA

Join us for afternoon tea on September 21 from 3 to 4:30 PM! Delicious treats and hot tea will be served, and all are welcome in the community living room at Thomaston Public Library.

We would also like to encourage folks to support their neighbors by bringing to Communi-TEA a non-perishable food, pet care, or personal care item to donate to the food pantry!

On Display at the Library

Back to School!

September means back to school season is officially here. Whether you have a little one with first day jitters or are feeling nostalgic for your own school days, we have the book for you! Come check out our display for the first half of September.

Banned Books Week

Words have power! September 23 - 29 is Banned Books Week. Celebrate freedom of expression and freedom to read with us and check out some books that are frequently challenged. You might be surprised which of your favorites have been banned in the past and which are still facing challenges today!

Last Chance Books

We have quite a few picture books that haven't been checked out in at least two years on display in the main room of the library - come see what's been lonely and left on the shelves for too long. If you see a favorite and think we should keep it, let us know by checking it out!

Showcase Space Available

Speaking of displays, you may have noticed that we have a lovely glass display case in our main reading room, and we would love to feature some of our local patrons' talents and interests. If you would be interested in showcasing your work, please contact us for more information!

Bookmobile Home Delivery Service

Some folks may be aware that we offer a Bookmobile Home Delivery Service, but many are not... We have obtained a grant to fund this service for people in Thomaston and some of the surrounding communities who are unable to come to the library due to disability (short- or long-term) or age. We have a new brochure to advertise the Bookmobile available at the library, or we would be happy to email it to anyone who would like a copy. Help us spread the word if you or someone you know is unable to visit us at the library and could benefit from a visit from our Bookmobile!
