There are many other important political issues at this time. But artists’ rights are the workers’ rights of musicians and other creative workers. The fight to hold Silicon Valley accountability for their other destructive corporate behaviors is our part of the fight to hold these corporations accountable for their destructive behaviors... and protect our livelihoods in the process.

During the past year, rank-and-file musicians in AFM Local 802’s Artist Rights Caucus (ARC 802) have been educating union members, supporting pro-artist legislation, and building towards a campaign to restore economic justice in the digital domain. Our problem isn’t digital technology itself — which most of us use, support, and value — but the unfair loopholes in the law which permit major online corporations to profit from mass infringement of our rights with impunity.

The AFM is already signatory to excellent policy which would put a stop to this. (See the AFM/Music Community Response to the US Copyright Offices Inquiry on Section 512 of the DMCA.) If enacted, it would restore a fair market for our work…and help musicians across the board.

But this isn’t going to happen without all of us showing our support by joining an Artist Rights Caucus.
