Ancient Plant Medicine for Healing the Mind, Heart & Spirit

As my nightshade garden has been blooming this summer, I have been carefully and patiently waiting for each type of flower to appear during the right phase of the moon and day of the week. I've been using the fresh nightshade flowers to make flower essences with my lovely well water from my rural area and my grandmother's crystal. Flower essences are pure magic -- they combine the beliefs behind prayer drinking, sympathetic magic, and folk medicine. 
 

What is a Flower Essence?

A flower essence is not an extract - it is an extremely diluted cold infusion of flowers in water that is traditionally preserved with brandy. The flowers are harvested in the early morning while still covered in dew and dropped into natural water in a crystal vessel. Traditionally, this sits in the sunlight for a few hours before the flowers are strained out and returned to the garden and three drops of the mother flower essence are added to 50/50 natural water and brandy to create a stock bottle.

How to Use a Flower Essence

To use a flower essence, first make a dosage bottle. A dosage bottle is made by filling a small tincture bottle with 50/50 spring water and brandy and then adding three drops from the stock bottle. Three drops are taken under the tongue from the dosage bottle, 1-3 times a day. A flower essence can be used only once or daily for a few months depending on the situation and the intention. Because of the level of dilution, flower essences are non toxic even if made with poisonous flowers and are a gentle and safe way to work with sacred nightshade plants as healers and teachers.

Belladonna Flower Essence

Brings an end to things: illusions, deceptions, ego, relationships, connections, and fears. Atropos, who gives her name to Atropa belladonna, cuts the threads of life and fate as one of the three Fates in Greek mythology. Cuts away all self-deception and outer bs to aid in self-awareness and getting your feet on the right path again. Cut away attachments and addictions to negative people, habits, and thoughts. Using this flower essence is similar to going through a quick Saturn return on purpose. It may always not be pleasant, but it will be for the best. After you finish working with this plant medicine, take time to rest and heal before moving on with life.

Used in folk magic to aid in astral travel, lucid dreaming, and shapeshifting.

Bittersweet Nightshade Flower Essence

This flower essence is for those who need an extra push to get our of their shell and out of their home to have adventures (you know who who are Cancers and Tauruses) but it alternately helps the overly adventurous who tend to get themselves in trouble due to impulsiveness (ahem, Aries, Sagittarius, and Gemini). It is balancing and repairs heart, mind, and soul connections with its gentle vines full of great strength and tenacity. It  can provide emotional protection to those who aren't the best with psychic shielding and setting boundaries with others.

Used in folk magic for protection from the evil eye and to cleanse the afflicted.

Datura Inoxia Flower Essence

Datura inoxia originates from Central America and the American Southwest where it was (and sometimes still is) worshipped as a powerful Grandmother spirit associated with Coyote and the healing practices of the indigenous medicine men and women. Datura inoxia, or Toloache, lends one the courage to go through important initiations, life changes, transformations, and endings without fear or clinging to the past. It tears away the veil pulled over the eyes and breaks illusions. It can alternately help one see the unseen and access the otherworld and dream world. Use datura inoxia to help find and more deeply work with your spirit guides. Datura also helps to repair things when you have gone too far or too dark, said something you can't take back or broke a taboo you wish you hadn't. It heals the deepest of wounds: the ones we inflict on our souls. Grandmother Datura traditionally requires one to abstain from meat, fat, and sexual activity when ingesting her medicine.

Datura Stramonium Flower Essence

Datura stramonium, also known as Jimsonweed, is believed to originate from Central and South America but can now be found naturalized around the world. This datura species can help us communicate with plant spirits, animal spirits, dead loved ones, and deities. It can help us navigate dreams, see the unseen, and believe in magic. Take datura to cleanse the body, mind, and soul of the poison of negative thoughts and speech, competitiveness, aggression, jealousy, fear, and other things that hurt you and others. As Jimsonweed is used in bioremediation to remove toxins from soil, so can it be used to remove toxins from ourselves.

Black Henbane originates from Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. This sacred plant has long been an ally of humans, helping sooth our anxieties and fears (real and irrational). It can bring calm in the middle of an emotional storm. Henbane is underworld medicine used to aid in communing with our ancestral lines and help heal any trauma or broken connections found there.

In traditional folk magic henbane was used as a love potion and to bring on psychic visions. It was a witches' herb of astral travel, lucid dreaming, and shapeshifting.

Wild Tobacco Flower Essence
 

Wild Tobacco (Nicotiana rustica) originates from South America where is has thousands of years of traditional use as a medicinal and ceremonial sacred plant. Tobacco is shadow medicine. It helps us face the ugliness of reality and our worst fears without backing down and it helps us make big decisions when we feel lost. Wild tobacco can help break negative cycles of depression, pessimism, despair, irritability, and bad attitudes preventing good things from entring your life. It is medicine for the people who see growth and change as the enemy or an obstacle instead of the blessing it is.
 

Wild tobacco is traditionally used in folk magic and ceremony to better connect with spirit guides, nature, the ancestors, and other sacred beings. It helps prayers be heard.
