National Tree Day Report - Sunday, 29th July.

We had a most enjoyable morning when over sixty people planted around 1,700 seedlings of trees, shrubs, grasses, rushes and herbs. We had people aged from as  young as three to over eighty busy working for two hours making a big difference to the area below Anderson street.  The children collected the empty pots, you can see how proud they are to have been there, working.
Afterwards there was a barbecue and coffee provided by Boroondara Council and we were joined by the Tree Day workers from further down Back Creek.

Tuesday Toilers
Tuesday Toilers are working hard to keep the weeds at bay.   Their practice is to weed around established plants so that they can flourish.   Each Tuesday they collect an enormous pile of weeds.

Tuesday Toilers will be having a Wildflower excursion to Karwarra Gardens, 1190 - 1196 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Kalorama on 25th September.  Fran has made enquiries about a guided tour and checked the date with the other Toilers.  There will be more information about transport etc at a later date
.

Flowering in the Park this month - Pterostylis pedunculata

Adrian has planted a lot of seedlings of Pterostylis pedunculata and Pterostylis curta in various locations around the park. They have been grown by Wally who is very good at growing orchids.   He has provided a lot of plants for our park.
The orchids have flowered already and the one I found (they are very small) was Pterostylis pedunculata and it was at the Riversdale Road end of the park.

Pterostylis pedunculata is also called Maroon Hood.   This is because its green and white flowers are tinged with maroon at the top and the tip of a maroon labellum is just visible.
It grows to 25cm high from a rosette of 4 - 6 prominently veined, ovate to oblong, dark green leaves to 40 mm long, ovate leaves to 40 mm long.
It is widespread in valley and dry sclerophyll forests, red gum woodland, tea-tree heath and grassy, low open forest.
It prefers moist soil amongst leaf litter and forms small dense colonies beneath low shrubs and grasses, or protected by tree trunks, It is easily grown and flowers reliably. (Flora of Melbourne.)
