Deagon Ward E-News

August 2018

There is never a dull moment in our community!

the last month has been jam packed with community activities, school fetes and festivals. The next month ahead looks to be just as exciting and busy.

I recently announced that Council has now funded the renewal of the Sandgate and District Neighbourhood Plan which will give us the opportunity to shape the way our local suburbs are developed over the coming years. Local residents will have the opportunity to have their say from early next year. I will keep the community updated throughout this process.

National Seniors Week starts this Saturday (18 August) and to kick off the week Stirling Hinchliffe to host our annual Seniors Safety Forum where residents heard from the Queensland Police, Fire and Emergency Services and Ambulance. We also had representatives from All About Living and Home Assist Secure and COTA Queensland. There are lots of free community events to mark National Seniors week - to find out more click here.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page to keep up to date with local news and events.

If you are part of a local community group and want me to feature an upcoming event in my e-news please contact my office to arrange this.

Cheers

Jared Cassidy

Out and About in the Community

Principal's Honour Roll, Sandgate District State High

Sandgate District State High School celebrated the achievements of some of the best and brightest today with high achieving students being inducted to the Principal's Honour Roll.

It was great to join Corinne Mulholland to congratulate these students, some of which have been on the honour roll every year like Tim.

It was great to see so many smiling parents, grandparents and other family members supporting these students.

Rockin Ray O'Brien's art show

Rockin Ray O'Brien's art show is officially opened! 16 local artists have joined Ray in a shop on the corner of Ward Street and Beaconsfield Tce Brighton until August 25.

I had the pleasure of officially opening the show on Saturday August 11, with a packed house - you'll want to get down quick to grab an original and unique piece of art!

IBIS Club AGM

I was pleased to chair the IBIS Club AGM early this month in the historic Sandgate Town Hall. The new executive is keen to hit the ground running. Well done to Grace, Georgina, Bob, Terry and Doreen and all of the members on a great year.

The IBIS club meets in the Sandgate Town Hall on Wednesdays and have regular entertainment, bus trips and raffles. If you or family or friends would like to get involved or find out more, let my office know.

Einbunpin Festival 2018

The 2018 Einbunpin Festival was another huge success!

Since 1992, the Einbunpin Festival is a celebration by and for the community about those things that make the Sandgate district special – the village atmosphere, the environment and the diverse talents and cultures that make up the community.

The Einbunpin Festival continues to provide an opportunity for the community to come together and show-off the vibrancy and artistic talents found in the district. It’s a great chance to learn more about our local community, and catch up with friends.

Thanks to our amazing sponsors and volunteers who make the festival possible.

Our major sponsors include;

Brisbane City Council festival funding
SANDBAG, who auspice our event.
State member for Sandgate, Stirling Hinchliffe.
Northside Family Law Centre,
Brackenridge McDonald's and
Kuhn Corp Press and Packaging

Other community sponsors included;

Wayne Swan, the Federal Member for Lilley, the Full Moon Hotel, Suez, Veolia, The Sandgate Guide and Artrageous Community Arts Centre.

Local prize sponsors include;

Sweet Georgia Boutique, Sandgate; Domino's Sandgate; Brackenridge Tavern; Capulet & Co, Sandgate; Oopsie Daisy Flowers & Gifts, Sandgate; Bayside Brewing; The Natural Candle Shop; Something About Audrey; TSG Golden Casket; Victoria's Bling; Priceline, Sandgate; and Sandgate Pharmacy.

We had the generous support of the Sandgate Scouts, Students of Bracken Ridge High School and St Patrick's College over the whole weekend too. It really was a big community effort!

50 Years of Brighton Roosters JRL

Stirling Hinchliffe MP and I joined Brighton Roosters players, coaches and supporters from the last 50 years tonight to mark their half century in Brighton. An amazing club with a rich history in our community.

The Roosters have grown from a group of seven friends in 1958 to a vibrant and friendly club, bursting at the seams! It was great to see club legend Micky Gibbs receive life membership - very well deserved!

Well done to Dylan, Chad and Dennis and everyone who worked so hard to bring this event together and on a great season.

Here's to another 50 years!

Deagon Racing Club Community Race Day, Deagon Ward Legend: Pat

After announcing this special local award my office was inundated with entries of people who are making a real difference in our community. We saw nominations for local teachers, members of community groups and volunteers and local business owners among others. I wasn’t specific in terms of length of service, or type of achievement, rather I wanted to find someone that has made a significant contribution in their chosen field.

With such a rich history of horse racing here in our local community, I thought it was fitting that a local horse trainer who has contributed so much to the industry be recognised on the day we re-launched the Deagon Race Day. Pat is not only a highly successful trainer; he has always been generous with his time and support for others in the industry over the years including other trainers and jockeys. It was great to have State Member and Minister for Racing Stirling Hinchliffe MP on hand to assist with the presentation at the Deagon Racing Club Community Race Day.

After the success of this year's award I will continue this next each year from now on.

St Kieran's Fete

The St Kieran's Fete was a great day out with great cakes, stalls, activities and entertainment! It was a wonderful way to celebrate a great local school. Wayne SwanStirling Hinchliffe MP, Lisa and I had the tough job of judging the cake competition!

Pennies By the Sea

It was a bright and sunny day for the annual Pennies by the Sea festival! 28 Pennies in the stack, while not a record - a great group of enthusiasts. I was Proud to team up with Stirling Hinchliffe MP in supporting this unique event once again.

Well done to Nic who was both the fastest on track and also slowest, which takes a lot of skill in the turtle ride!

Well done to Queensland Penny Farthing and Historical Cycle Club on a great day.

NAIDOC Week

It's not a Northside National NAIDOC week without our annual Koobara Kindy celebrations. It's great to see crowds building each and every year and more activities than ever for families. Thanks to the wonderful team and all of the volunteers.

Stirling Hinchliffe MP and I joined the community to reflect on this year's theme for NAIDOC - because of her we can - something that is true for all of us.
