Global Partner Studio (GPS) Institute

Catalyzing collaboration and new high-impact experiential learning.
We are thrilled to announce the ELN's inaugural Global Partner Studio (GPS) Institute to be held here at UB on October 1-5! We are inviting some of our most exciting international partners to UB for a week of sharing, networking and capacity building, toward the goal of catalyzing new high-impact experiential learning opportunities for our students.

This year's inaugural institute will focus on social innovation, STEM education and health, and will feature partners from Ghana, Jamaica, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Through a series of presentations and studio sessions, you can connect with our partners and explore new opportunities for collaboration and pedagogical innovation.
  1. Partner Presentations*: Monday, Oct. 1, 3 p.m., in 145 Student Union. This open session will feature partner presentations that provide context and a framework for engagement and collaboration. An audience Q&A will follow.
  2. Meet our Partners*: Monday, Oct. 1, 5 p.m., in 145 Student Union. Learn about our guests and explore their backgrounds and areas of focus at the opening reception.
  3. Pedagogical Innovation Session*: Tuesday, Oct. 2, 9-11 a.m., in 17 Norton Hall. Learn more about GPS platforms and resources for igniting global partnerships, deepening collaborative relationships, sharing innovations with broader communities and more.
  4. Studio Sessions*: Tuesday, Oct. 2, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 4, 9-11 a.m., in 17 Norton Hall. Identify and meet with partners of interest to discuss ideas for engagement and collaboration.
  5. Submit your idea for collaboration via our website to receive follow-up support offered by ELN staff and partnership sponsors.
  6. Closing Reception*: Friday, Oct. 5, 4:30 p.m., in Silverman Library's 3rd Floor Atrium. Join us for a celebration of the emerging ideas for engagement and collaboration and help us wish our global partners farewell.
Since faculty are essential to student learning, we hope to engage UB faculty from diverse disciplines and areas of study to explore synergies toward curricular innovation. The GPS Institute represents an innovative vehicle for traveling farther and deeper with our international partners, and we hope that many of you will join us on this journey.

Experiential Learning Network Opportunities

Course Infusion Funds - Priority Deadline Sept. 17

The ELN is excited to partner with you through our Course Infusion Fund, which supports the infusion of hands-on learning within existing courses. Our resources can fund field trips, guest presenters or innovative programs that take students beyond the classroom, and there is still time to apply for funding to support experiences this fall. The priority deadline is Monday, Sept. 17, after which proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. Click here to submit a brief proposal or email Charlie Baxter with any questions.

Experiential Learning Presentations

The ELN would like to introduce your students to the benefits and variety of experiential learning at UB. A 20-minute in-class presentation could be tailored to the needs of your class and would involve an invitation to connect with the staff in 17 Norton. Contact Charlie Baxter if you would like to schedule a presentation.

Call for Participants

Participate in an Experiential Learning Roundtable

ELN Faculty Fellow Jesse Miller is organizing a roundtable on experiential learning for the Northeast Modern Language Association Conference to be held March 21-24, 2019 in Washington, D.C. The roundtable aims to explore the multivalent meanings of experience as used in the discourse and practice of experiential learning, and particular attention will be paid to how various notions of experience are embodied in particular activities, assignments and projects. Those interested in participating are encouraged to submit a proposal related to these ideas on the NeMLA website and are welcome to contact Jesse Miller with any questions.

Jody Kleinberg Biehl's Trip to South Africa

A Partnership Developed Through COIL

After going through the COIL process and finding a partner with whom she could collaborate, ELN Faculty Fellow Jody Kleinberg Biehl finally had the opportunity this summer to visit Durban, South Africa, where she met her COIL partner, Nisha, and her students. While there, she acted as guest lecturer to Nisha's students and further developed their plan for virtual class collaboration. Jody is looking forward to the fall semester when her and Nisha's classes can virtually learn together about the ethics of journalism. If you would like to learn more about COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) and how opportunities like this can be developed, contact Christina Heath.

Faculty Spotlight

Jessica Kruger

Every Wednesday night, Prof. Jessica Kruger brings a small group of undergraduate public health students to the Lighthouse Free Medical Clinic where they work with social work and medical students to provide care to real patients. Read more about how this experience helps fill in the gaps in students' educations by providing opportunities to collaborate and apply what they've learned.

Student Spotlight

Derek Burghardt

As one of the undergraduate public health students volunteering in Jessica's clinic, Derek Burghardt has learned to work outside his comfort zone and has embraced learning on the fly. Read more about how working in the clinic helped Derek understand what public health is and what it does.
