August 2018

Dear colleagues,

Welcome to the latest national marine science community quarterly update.

The National Marine Science Committee (NMSC) met in Canberra on 9 August, and the meeting report is now available here. Headline news is that the May 2018 Federal Budget provided support for a number of high priority issues in our decadal plan. This again emphasises the benefits of working as a national community.

There is quite a lot happening in the Australian Marine Parks network. As of yesterday, management plans for the network are officially in place and can be found here. Expressions of interest are being called for members of Australian Marine Park Advisory Committees (AMPAC). Parks Australia has developed a Science Directions Statement to its guide science activities over the next five years. NMSC was briefed on the statement which we expect to be released shortly.

The Marine National Facility is seeking an early career marine scientist for its Scientific Advisory Committee. Expressions of interest are due by 31 August and details can be found here. NMSC is keen to improve engagement of ECRs and this is an excellent opportunity.

Regards,

Tim Moltmann, Chair
on behalf of the National Marine Science Committee
