CEO Welcome
Where has the year gone? It's hard to believe we are nearly at the end of August already! It's been a busy few months here at HelpingMinds with lots of exciting news and achievements, it's really made the year fly by!

In case you missed it, we recently announced that we will now be expanding our service delivery to include the Northern Territory! This
represents our first office beyond WA, and is a pivotal time in our 42-year history. I am sure that our founders will be proud of how far we have come since our humble beginnings in 1976.

I recently attended the International Mental Health Conference on the Gold Coast, where HelpingMinds staff member Denise gave a special presentation on her lived experience and work as a peer support worker. It was a very special experience for Denise and you can read more about it and watch the video below. Above is a picture of Denise and I enjoying the sunshine on the Gold Coast.

We've also had great news from our regional offices who have been busy receiving grants and award nominations - more on that later.

I am very proud of our staff who have been working hard to achieve our mission to
support individual and family recovery and to make a positive difference in the community and mental health sector by delivering quality services, education and advocacy.

CEO, HelpingMinds

Staff Training Week
In June HelpingMinds staff attended a wonderful staff training week at the Burswood on Swan. Staff from all over WA came together to learn, connect and grow. As an organisation with offices across WA it was a great opportunity for our staff to meet up and share experiences and ideas.

It was an action packed week that left our staff feeling inspired and ready to take on the challenges of the year ahead!

Here is a group picture we took down on the beautiful Swan River.
Reconciliation Action Plan

We are pleased to have completed our first Reconciliation Action Plan.

Our reconciliation journey to date has been driven by many staff who are committed to supporting a positive means of engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

We would like to strengthen those relationships with confidence that we are working in a respectful, inclusive and effective manner and that we are being open to learning new ways of working that benefit our clients, our partners and our staff.

For more information on our reconciliation plan, head to our
website.

HelpingMinds in Darwin
We recently announced that HelpingMinds will be expanding our service delivery to include the Northern Territory.

This is a result of our successful track record of delivering quality mental health services across Western Australia over our 42-year history. Our local consultation in Darwin has shown that our unique approach to mental health service delivery will be welcomed.

Pictured is our first staff member in Darwin, Aisling, with HelpingMinds Head of Individualised Services, Eimear, in our new Darwin office!
International Mental Health Conference
Our CEO Debbie Childs and Peer Support Worker, Denise Spencer, recently attended the 19th International Mental Health Conference on the Gold Coast. Denise gave a special presentation entitled "The Journey from Isolation to Telling a New Story", about how support groups have helped people with mental health challenges recover their dignity and gain a new story to tell.

One of Denise's personal goals was to talk about lived experience and peer support at a mental health confrence and we are so proud of her!

You can watch Denise's presentation on our
Facebook videos!

NAIDOC Week

In July we celebrated an action packed NAIDOC Week, where we explored this year's theme "because of her, we can".

We were honoured to have the incredible Sheila Humphries come into our Perth office to share her story of growing up as part of the stolen generation with our staff. Sheila also led an art workshop with our staff where we created our very own piece of artwork! We all found the painting to be very therapeutic and inspiring and we are very proud of the finished product. It was a very special event and Sheila's strength and resilience had a profound impact on our staff and we all felt she truly embodied this year's theme "because of her, we can".
We also had stalls at a variety of community NAIDOC events in Belmont, Armadale and Midland, where members of the general public enjoyed decorating stones, making jewelery and adding to our 'gratitude tree'. Our Broome office also held a delicious verandah BBQ for the community at the start of the week.

We value your input

We are on the look out for anyone who would like to to be a part of a private Facebook focus group where you can provide feedback on HelpingMinds services and promotions.

If you have lived experienced of a mental health condition or as a mental health carer and would like to be involved, please email us with the subject 'focus group' and we will be in touch.

HelpingMinds Carnarvon receives grant

Our Carnarvon office was over the moon to be one of five organisations to receive a $10,000 Centenary Grant from Commonwealth Bank to go towards our youth services in the Carnarvon region.

Pictured is the amazing Trish and Lori from our Carnarvon office, with Jason from Commonwealth Bank.

HelpingMinds South Hedland nominated for
Best Community Organisatio
n

In other exciting news our South Hedland office was nominated as a finalist for a "Best Community Organisation" Award for Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce 2018 Business of the Year Awards!

And did you know that our South Hedland office is run by one staff member - the amazing Kesi! We are honoured to be nominated and to have all of the work that Kesi's does in the Hedland community recognised.

LGBTQ+ Staff Training

Did you know that 84% of transgender Australians, 60% of intersex Australians and 16% of lesbian, gay and bisexual Australians have thought about ending their lives at some point? By comparison, less than 3% of Australians consider or attempt suicide.

HelpingMinds is committed to providing inclusive services for the LGBTQ+ community and our Perth Metro staff recently had a great training session with Bryan from Freedom Centre about how to provide effective and respectful services for LGBTQ+ young people.

Creative Carers

We thought we would share some beautiful artwork that has been sent to us from some of our HelpingMinds clients who use art as a form or therapy or respite.

On the left is a beautiful painting by Karen Twort who says that painting "provides an absolute freedom to express how I feel, my own private counselling session with myself".

On the bottom left is a stunning photograph by Judy Tremlett who is lucky enough to have this beautiful (and rare) Crimson Rosella visit her garden three times a day for a feed!

And lastly on the bottom right is some finished products from our Carnarvon Emotions in Art support group, who meet on Tuesday evenings to get creative and share their experiences as mental health carers.
Does art help you on your mental healthy journey? Email us a picture of your artwork or to join one of our art therapy support groups call us on (08) 9427 7100.

Mental Health Funding Boosted

The Minister for Health, Honorable Greg Hunt MP, has announced a $160 million funding boost for mental health services that will help Australians with mental illness and psychosocial disability who aren’t otherwise covered by the NDIS.

The media release from the Health Minister's office says that the funding "will help people for whom the NDIS was not designed, but who will benefit from specialised but less intense psychosocial services, such as individual and group assistance and rehabilitation, ensuring these people don’t miss out on crucial support."

We look forward to hearing more and seeing how this funding will benefit people living with a mental health condition.

You can read the full media release here.

My Health Record

As you would have heard, in 2018 every Australian will get a My Health Record which is an online summary of your key health information.

The Federal Government has moved to allay concerns about privacy protections in the My Health Record system, announcing changes to allow the deletion of records and restrict police and government agencies' access to patient data.

The Consumers Health Forum have created an overview that lists the pros and cons of My Health Record, which you can read here.

For more information on My Health Record, or if you would like to opt out, head to their website. The opt out period closes 15th November.

Have your say!

The Department of Communities is undertaking a review of the Carers Recognition Act 2004 and they want your feedback!

There is still time to have your say. The closing date for the feedback has been extended to 31 August 2018. The Department invites carers, community members and other stakeholders to have their say

The Mental Health Commission also has a range of expressions of interest for Advisory Groups that may interest people with lived experience as a mental health carer or as someone living with a mental health condition.

Are you or a loved one eligible for an NDIS plan?

What is the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)?

The NDIS is a National Scheme designed to provide support to Australians with a disability as well as their families and carers. Eligible participants will receive a personalised plan that focuses on their specific goals.

My loved one has a mental health diagnosis, can they access NDIS supports?

In theory yes. There is a list of requirements that has been set up by the NDIS that needs to be met. We understand that every person's story is unique, and it may not be obvious from the set criteria if you are eligible. HelpingMinds can give free, confidential advice to help you find out if you or a loved one could qualify as an NDIS participant.

Will the NDIS help me?

HelpingMinds has been running NDIS in 2 locations for the last 3 years, 90% of clients have confirmed a notable improvement in their lives since using the NDIS scheme.
  • “I’m actually getting out of the house now”
  • “HelpingMinds has been a lifesaver”
  • “Getting out more, feeling confident”
  • “My Peer Support Worker helped turn my scars into stars”
Does the NDIS cover my region?

The NDIS scheme is rolling out across Western Australia over the next 2 years with the entire state expected to be supported by 2020. Even if your region is not expected to receive support soon, please get in touch as we can still assist you with advice and your application before the official roll out.
