Sad Bastard Music Club

Volume 10

> ...the world isn't in flames quite yet...

That's what I said last time I did one of these. And now, basically the entire state of California is, quite literally, in flames.

And what pairs best with a fiery inferno? You got it: Sad Bastard Music.

Hey, I wanted to talk about something important. Since I've been doing these things on a semi-regular basis, one thing I've been conscious of is representation. I've tried to make it a point to make sure that the playlists I put out there aren't all just a bunch of dudes. I thought I was doing a pretty darn good job of it, too, until I actually ran the numbers.

I plan on writing up a blog post about this, but basically, even though I try -- pretty hard actually -- to keep an even ratio, my male-to-female artist ratio is still heavily skewed in the "M" column. Now, this problem isn't unique to me. The music industry, as a whole, has this problem. But that doesn't mean there aren't good, non-dude artists out there that should be heard and seen, and this isn't even taking into consideration that many of the artists I'm lumping in the "non-dude" category are mostly dudes with a woman singing.

I am working on this. I want to tip the bar in the other direction, and have equal representation across genders, as well as representation (more than the 2 currently acting as sole representatives) for transgendered artists. This is a thing that is important to me. In the meantime, NPR released a "200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women" playlist (only 193 are actually available on Spotify, unfortunately) that you can check out. And, if you do, you'll recognize some of those songs that I stole from that list, because the list is awesome. I plan on checking out many of those artists deeper than I had previously (like, how have I gone this long without listening to Regina Spektor? Seriously?).

Okay, that's enough from me. Have you checked out that podcast thing I'm doing? You should. But you don't have to. It's cool.

🖤
