September 8, 2018
a day of action to
Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice
In September, officials from cities and states, along with representatives from business and civil society from around the world are gathering in California for the Global Climate Summit. On the Saturday before the Summit starts, we the people will gather in cities and towns around the world to urge political leaders to move quickly toward a Renewable Energy Future.
350 Salem OR is excited to join our sister chapter 350PDX at
Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice Portland, hosted by the
Oregon Just Transition Alliance. OJTA's goal is to shift power away from the existing extractive, exploitative political and economic system to one where power is democratically shared and everyone can thrive.
Rise for Climate, Jobs and Justice Portland will focus on supporting a clean energy future, opposing construction of the Pacific Connector gas pipeline and Jordan Cove Liquefied Natural Gas terminal, and opposing state ballot measure 105, which would repeal Oregon's 31 year old Sanctuary law. The event, packed with speakers, music, entertainment, and information, will be held from noon until 4 PM.
Take our chartered bus or meet us at event location in Glenhaven City Park NE 82nd Avenue & Siskiyou Street , Portland, OR* The bus will leave Salem at 10:30 AM from the Market Street Park and Ride in Salem and arrive back in Salem around 5:00 PM. TAKE ACTION
No LNG - No Pipeline - No Fracked Gas in Oregon
Last chance - August 20 - to file comments for both US Army Corps of Engineers and Oregon Dept. of Environmental, the certifying agencies for Water Quality permits
Submit as many comments as you want, each comment on a particular point and submit additional comments to make different points (e.g., water must be protected for recreation; for healthy fish and wildlife habitat; for safe drinking water; etc.). Record numbers of public comments and testimonies have helped stop several coal and oil projects in the Pacific Northwest. Over 25,000 have been submitted so far.
We have an opportunity to stop this 230-mile pipeline which would transport fracked gas* through Southern Oregon to Jordan Cove in Coos Bay to be cooled to a liquid at -261o F and exported to Asia. The Canadian company, Pembina, can’t build the Jordan Cove Terminal and Pacific Connector Pipeline without all required federal and state permits.
The liquefaction plant itself would become the largest single source of climate changing pollution in Oregon and would undermine action to meet goals to protect our climate and transition to renewable energy. Methane leaks during extraction, processing and transport plus combustion at the final destination increase the climate change impact.
*(Most natural gas produced in the US and Canada is produced by fracking and this is increasing as conventional sources are depleted.)
Comments can be submitted online. Rogue Climate and the No LNG Exports Coalition have comment writing guidelines here: http://www.nolngexports.org/write-comments Click on the link for comments from the General Public.
