Dear Friends:
 

I'm very excited to announce the culmination of a long-term project that will finally begin next week.  We will be presenting our SmallsLIVE course as part of the curriculum at the New School for Social Research's Jazz and Contemporary program.  The course, titled "SmallsLIVE: Profiles From The Contemporary Jazz Scene" will utilize our extensive audio/video archive to profile and present several currently performing jazz artists on the scene through the experience of Smalls Jazz Club.  By using interviews, transcriptions, archived performances and actual in-class appearances, we hope to give the students a true view into what's really happening in New York today and to introduce them to musicians they may not have known about.  Our goal is to bring awareness of the work of these artists and their relationship to Smalls (and Mezzrow) as they function in their day to day working relations with the the clubs.  We know that this is going to be a special class and a rare opportunity for these students.  I want to thank Jeff McGregor for his dedicated hard work in making this vision come alive and to the new director of the New School Dean Keller Coker for his support in making this class happen.
