VTA's BART Phase II Update:
Public Forums and Field Work

In accordance with federal and state laws, VTA has prepared a Draft Relocation Plan to assist residential and non-residential property owners and occupants that may be impacted by any property acquisition in order to construct VTA’s BART Phase II Extension.
Outreach to property owners began in June to incorporate their feedback into the draft plan. Now, the public will have an opportunity to comment over a 30 day period starting today, August 17.
Four public forums are being held to present the Draft Relocation Plan and receive public comments:

The Draft Relocation Plan is available for download on VTA’s BART Project website. Hard copies are also available at VTA offices, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Berryessa libraries in San Jose, and the Central Park Library in Santa Clara.

As with any major infrastructure or transportation project completed in an urban area, some relocations of residential and non-residential occupants are unavoidable. However, VTA is seeking to minimize the number of potential acquisitions as part of its planning efforts.
A proposed Final Relocation Plan will be prepared to respond to the public comments received and submitted to VTA’s Board of Directors for its review, consideration, and adoption at its December 6, 2018 meeting.

Field work begins to prepare for
VTA’s BART Phase II Project

In preparation for the construction of the six mile BART extension, VTA will gather information about the geological conditions and locations of utilities in the path of the future project. It is necessary to know more about the types of soil and where current underground utilities are located as we design the BART tunnel, stations, and other facilities.
Geotechnical investigations will provide important details about the soil underground and will involve drilling and extracting soil samples to test. The equipment for this work includes a truck-mounted drilling rig and a cone penetration test truck.
Utility investigations will reveal the precise locations of underground utilities such as water, power, communications, and sewer lines. A truck-mounted, high-powered vacuum will safely remove a small amount of soil around each utility. A surveyor will note the exact location and then the small hole will be backfilled. The pavement will be replaced and the crew will move to the next location.
Short-term, intermittent lane closures will happen at locations along project area to allow for access and to protect workers.
Crews are expected to be in the field as soon as late August 2018 and continue through the end of 2018. The field work will be coordinated with stakeholders including the Cities of San José and Santa Clara, residents, local business and property owners, and others located near the planned work. The VTA Community Outreach Team will be in the field notifying businesses and residents on the exact timing of this work.
