Art in the Garden Series!

2018 Art in the Garden Series
Join us for our late summer series of scintillating Sunday art activations in the Museum’s luscious Heritage Garden. Finding inspiration from the themes and energy of Judith M. William’s iconic paintings, our artists use playful mediums to explore the symbols, stories and meaning contained within our feature exhibit, Refuge Cove: Moving with the Tide.
Next date:
Sunday, August 26
noon to  2 p.m.
Natural Dying in the Garden with Kathrin Stößer
Blind Channel Cruise with Misty Isles

Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4/5 – Blind Channel cruise with Misty Isles.
Cap off the summer with a cruise through the heart of the Discovery Islands in a circle tour that winds through this dense archipelago, famous for its racing tides and marine life. The Cortes Island Museum is the host for this two-day program led by Mike Moore of the motor/sailing vessel Misty Isles.

Mike is the ideal guide, with decades of experience in marine navigation, natural and human history. “These cold, rich waters are frequented by whales, dolphin and porpoise,” says Mike, “and there are scattered historical sites too.” Mike, a gifted raconteur, will share stories throughout about marine life, Aboriginal villages, the age of European exploration, and the settlers who followed to brave a life on this rugged seacoast.

Dinner and overnight accommodation are provided by Blind Channel Resort on West Thurlow Island, accessible by water only and famous among yachters for their seafood menu. This family-run business was built upon the remains of a once thriving cannery and sawmill, which left colourful beach finds as the source for mosaic art pieces found throughout the resort.

The return trip hugs the mountainous shores of the mainland, to pass through famous Dent and Arran Rapids, where Spanish explorers of the late 18 century nearly lost their ships to boiling whirlpools off the mouth of Bute Inlet.

The departure and return point for this tour is Whaletown, Cortes Island, with connections timed for the Quadra Island ferry. For details about this trip check the Cortes Island Museum at http://cortesmuseum.com/. To register call the Museum at 250-935-6340. The cost for the cruise (meals while cruising and accommodation) is $380 per person for couples or $410 per person/single occupancy, GST included. Dinner at the lodge is extra.

Wild Cortes at Linnaea Farm
WILD  CORTES is open summer Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday & Saturday noon to 4 p.m. (year round) at the Linnaea Farm Education Centre, 1255 Seaford Road. Thanks to generous funding from BC Museums Association, Heritage BC and BC Canada 150, you can now take a stroll on the wild side of Cortes Island to see mounted specimens (by taxidermist Laurel Bohart) – from a dragonfly to a giant hornet nest to Raven’s Relations to eagles to a baby beaver and seals. Compare skulls, marvel at a Curiosity Cabinet, try on costumes of endangered species, peruse our in-house library, put a puzzle of Cortes watersheds together, get eye-to-eye with eagles and a heron and find out what’s raiding an oystercatcher’s nest!

Entrance is down the steps near Linnaea’s front door with a handicap entrance down the library ramp. Admission is by donation. Do animals & ecology interest you?  Wild Cortes is looking for volunteers to host our exhibit. Training happily provided. Call Lynne Jordan at 250-935-6472.
