Maryland AD Evans, Prez Loh & other Terps leaders met with the parents of current FB student-athletes yesterday morning. Some parents were supportive of on leave HC Durkin, "When the ESPN thing came out, I'm sorry to say, I was kind of upset with them, because this program is not toxic. This program is a great family environment. My son has not complained about anything. None of the kids [have] and I know most of the team." Others, not so much, "It's a very sad situation. It's not what we signed up for. We entrusted his care to the coaching staff, to the training staff. How can something list this happen? It's been a brutal culture. We will be meeting after the parents' meeting to share our feedback [with the commission]." Evans: "We have been communicating with our football players parents for the last few months, but felt it was important to bring everyone together so we could hear their questions and comments in person. [...] We are keeping the lines of communication open and I encouraged all of them to reach out to me personally with their thoughts." More. (link, link)
Yahoo's Forde & Thamel write on the "confused Ohio State community" as class is set to start in Columbus & the fate of FB HC Meyer is still unknown. The pair get comments from students moving back in & some cite a "weird vibe" on campus. 105.7 The Zone radio host Hooley: "Everyone is on pins and needles. And everyone just wants it over with." (link); ESPN's Matich with a strong video message on the situation at OSU. Recounts physical abuse his mother endured when he was a child, calls for more women to expose "rats" who are the culprits, also notes the need for all the facts to come out. (link)
Despite what might be popular belief, new Kansas AD Long says he's not counting down the days until he can hire a new FB HC, "If you look at my path in the AD jobs that I have had, that’s not what I have done. […] I will be at practices and evaluating but the proof is on the field. So September 1 the real evaluation on the field starts. I am excited to see that. I was impressed with the student-athletes at football that I engaged. There is a lot of energy on that practice field, and a lot of energy on that coaching staff. There was a real positive vibe there when I was there. I’m looking forward to seeing that continue." Further, Long reiterates the support FB needs from the KU fanbase, calls fans a "resource," and, "...we need them on the front end." (link); Long celebrated his first Kansas win (Women's Soccer over Pepperdine), with a trip down a fire pole. No word on if the pole is in Long's house or if he'll slide for every 'W.' (link)
Illinois AD Whitman lands another sizable gift for the under construction Football Performance Center as this time it's a Granite City couple who ring the bell for $1.2M. Donor Goldenberg: "We believe strongly in our director of athletics Josh Whitman, who epitomizes 'Illini Forever,' and our head football coach Lovie Smith and his program." Fundraising for the project now tops $10M. (link)

Word on the street is Oregon & Georgia could be close to inking a deal that would see the pair open the 2022 FB season in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. When asked about the possibility, Dawgs AD McGarity kept it clean, "No future games are confirmed until they are fully executed. (We're) in talks with multitude of teams for the future." UO & UGA have only met one time, a 1977 matchup in Athens. (link)

Texas A&M FB HC Fisher: "When you build facilities, the worst thing you can do is stop." That's a headlining quote from a HookEm.com entry on the facilities boom across the Big 12 & other schools in the Lone Star State. Texas Tech boss Kingsbury: "Bigger, better, shinier. I think that’s the way it’s going. Anything that you can attract recruits with, we’re going to be wanting it and I think you’re going to see that continued to move in that direction. Any way you can differentiate yourself from a facilities standpoint would be a positive for your program." Baylor's Rhule touts the benefits of an all-enclosed FB operations building. TCU HC Patterson noted the importance of commitment to facilities as a data point for conference realignment. Kansas State HC Snyder knows facilities are important, but questions overall priorities. Lots more, including a thorough review of the litany of projects underway in the Big 12. (link)
Wyoming holds the grand opening for its new $44M, 71K square foot Mick and Susie McMurry High Altitude Performance Center, which includes a whole laundry list of amenities. Pokes AD Burman: "It closes a chapter, but we can start another chapter. I’ve been talking about it for a number of years. We have two what I call critical projects that we have to accomplish in the near term. Our swimming and diving teams compete in a facility that is just nowhere near Division I standard, and then our fans have the unfortunate experience on the west side of the stadium, when it comes to restrooms, concessions, seating, lighting. So we’ve got work to do on the west side. And then all of you, the press area is inadequate for a Division I standard. So we’ve got work to do, but we’re very proud of what we just accomplished, and we’ll take the weekend off and then figure out what’s next." (link - article, link - video tour)
New Mexico State hosts Wyoming to open the FB season here in a couple of weeks & Aggies AD Moccia notes the massive exposure opportunity for his side with the matchup set for ESPN2. An 8pm kick time is later than normal in Las Cruces & NMSU is pushing some ticket blocks for just $3 a pop. Moccia: "It’s not once-in-a-lifetime but it is a once-in-a-decade opportunity for us. We’re making a few sacrifices for this game, but considering we have a chance to showcase our program to 80 million eyeballs, we’ll risk it." More Moccia: "It’s obviously not ideal to have promotions like this. You’d like to maintain price integrity, especially for football and men’s basketball. But facing a quality Mountain West team on national TV is a unique opportunity, especially when we’re auditioning for a conference affiliation." (link)
The Blue A Society (BAS) is Utah State's new major gifts program that entails a minimum $25K commitment over five years or a one-time donation of $25K+. So far, a number of high profile university leaders are among the 40 "investors" who have committed, including Aggies AD Hartwell, Prez Cockett, FB HC Wells & MBB HC Smith. AVP & Deputy AD Barnes: "I am not aware of this level of investment being made by the president, athletic director, football coach, and men's basketball coach at any other institution in college athletics. We hope that it will motivate other USU alumni and friends to rally around the Blue A Society and elevate USU Athletics to new heights." (link)
Minnesota Women's Volleyball HC McCutcheon has won more than 160 matches in six seasons leading the Gophers, has earned multiple Coach of the Year awards & previously led both the U.S. Men's & Women's National Teams. McCutcheon reflects on his path from a youth player in New Zealand, to a collegiate student-athlete at BYU & now as one of the game's top leaders, "We all want to try to become the best versions of ourselves. That’s what was driving me. That idea of expanding and growing and trying to become better every day has been a constant theme for me. And coaching is a great environment for that to happen. I’m not sure I chose this profession as much as it chose me. It’s been very satisfying. […] For me, it’s never been about the result. I t’s about trying to figure out how we can be better at this. How can we improve and grow and evolve? Where it all leads, I don’t know. But as long as I feel like we’re growing and evolving, it’s a great job." (link)

Outgoing Minnesota Prez Kaler camps with the Star Tribune about his final year in office: "I’m not going to limp out the door as a lame duck. I’m going to finish what’s in front of me. By the end of next year, I will have done everything that I can do. I could have marked time and finished out my contract year, but I decided to accelerate this and let a new person come and get on jump on it." Most proud of graduation rates, research funding, fundraising efforts and low tuition rates, but points to negative headlines of sexual misconduct and athletic department woes as two of his biggest frustrations. Stands by his swift firing of former Gophers AD Teague and the school's handling of an alleged gang rape involving FB student-athletes, "In most all of these instances that a bad thing has happened, we’ve handled them with transparency, with alacrity and appropriately." (link)
UNLV boss Reed-Francois points to a number of FB student-athletes from the Los Angeles area who will get to play near home with FB's season opener against USC, as well as the $1.15M payday that is part of "balance competitive positioning, recruiting, opportunities for our student-athletes and location for both students and fans." The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Anderson notes future schedules that highlight 'Power 5' programs making their way to Sin City and, "If the new stadium helps deliver the kind of revenue UNLV hopes for, the days of having to play at USC without a return trip could be numbered." (link)
LSU FB student-athlete Davis was booked Friday on one count of second-degree battery related to four incidents of alleged physical abuse of his girlfriend between April 2017 and June 2018. Davis has been suspended indefinitely, but his attorney offered this: "I have been contacted by the victim and she has provided me a statement that the allegations are, in fact, false. It’s my understanding that she has also made similar statements to other entities in law enforcement." (link); The Advocate's Rabalais' denounces Tigers' HC Orgeron's response of: "Do the right thing. It’s always about doing the right thing. It’s always about protecting the team. I think our administration does a great job of educating our guys the dos and don’ts. We’ve brought in several speakers. We’ve had several seminars for our football team throughout the year." Rabalais: "Orgeron missed a chance to take a strong stance regarding domestic violence when he met with media Saturday afternoon. ... Orgeron had an opportunity, for whatever it was worth, to forcefully denounce domestic violence as despicable and intolerable, regardless of how the Davis case turns out. He could have said as much without having to go near 'ongoing legal matter' territory. He could have painted himself as the anti-Urban Meyer. Instead, the memorable sound bite is 'protect the team,' which has a win-at-all-costs sound to it. Which is unfortunate, because it's just as easy to condemn what he said (or did not say) as it is to point to ways he has tried to tell his players about doing the right thing." (link)

(link); Miami (FL) painted a turnover chain on the hood of their golf cart, plans to continue using the prop this season.
