August is the month in which we give our intentions and gratitude to Allpamama - Mother Earth.  Don Sebastian, Q'eros elder, accompanied us and led the offering ceremony at our Kusi Kawsay Andean School.  Each student, teacher, parents and members of the community dedicate their intentions and give thanks.  What a wonderful way to begin the second half of the school year: filled with gratitude and heartfelt purpose

Waldorf Teachers at Kusi Kawsay

We were so fortunate to be able to welcome back Ken Smith and Waldorf teachers from the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training (BACWTT).  Each year, BACWTT visits Kusi Kawsay for two weeks, bringing a wealth of practice and insights.  They accompany our teachers and students and weave in their Waldorf knowledge so that we may continue to apply elements of Waldorf pedagogy at our Andean School.

Reflection by Kusi Kawsay:  The personal feedback that the Waldorf teachers gave us was very helpful.  There were many suggestions on how to cultivate a connection with children from the start of the class.  For example, if it is Monday, and the children are just coming back from the weekend, an active rhythm with movement can help kickstart their week.

In the 2nd grade, we learned how stories can help provide context, for example, what the role of the student is and what the role of the teacher is.  We learned how to adapt stories in a personalized context for each student and act out dynamic roles, enabling students to move or even having leisurely roles for those who are more introverted or observers. We did discuss how to identify the quieter students and how to motivate and engage them. For the 4th and 5th grade, we approached topics such as comparing the similarities of altitude with latitude. For the 7th and 8th grade, there were also several suggestions on how to approach certain subjects, like physics and chemistry, while simultaneously being aware of the natural process of the child. It is a lot of work to be present in a classroom but equipped with the right tools, we guide our work to serve the best interest of the child.

We would like to thank the BACWTT for their time, energy and presence.  We love and appreciate you very much.  We would also like to thank Paula, Fielding and Valentin who were amazing translators!  Muchas gracias to Kusi Kawsay's Señora Carlota who provided wonderful local and traditional meals throughout these two weeks.

Annual Partner Meeting She's the First

For the second time, Kusi Kawsay was invited to participate in She's The Firs (STF) Annual Partner meeting in New York.  With our wonderful network of supporters and allies around the world, we are able to call upon our Kusi Kawsay ambassadors to represent us when there are important events in other places that we are not always able to get to.  This year, Ani Ventocilla, a wonderful young woman who volunteered and visited Kusi Kawsay on several occasions, was able to represent us at STF Partner Meeting.  Ani shared with us that our project was very complimented and our work focused on girls and woment's empowerment is part of a great global movement - how inspiring! We are thankful to provide quality education and empower girls, thanks to the support of STF.

"It's not about telling a girl what success looks like, but about giving her the agency to decide what her path is."

Embraced

Distance can make us feel far from one another, but remember that we are all under the same roof, embraced by our earth and Pachamama.  Our hearts are connected and with each day through each righteous action that we consciously realize, we diminish the distance, finding ourselves together, 'heart in heart', in this wonderful journey of life.  Be good to yourself, be good to each other.  Your acts of kindness honour a greater purpose.  Urpillay Sonqollay.

Thank you for your continuous love and support

Thank you for being here.  You are wonderful and we are grateful for each and every one of you!
