Sunflower Rain
By: Debbie Jordan
Ben and I had been on one of our long photo shoots a few years ago. We began at Bombay Hook NWR, Delaware; stopped at Conowingo, MD; and concluded our day at several sunflower fields in Harford County, MD. We arrived just as it started to rain, but that did not stop us from enjoying the beauty of the large field of sunflowers that sprawled in front of us. After capturing multiple photos of individual sunflowers and interesting field panoramas, I zeroed in on this particular sunflower. The petals were still dripping from the quick rain shower, and the yellow was accentuated by the moisture. I love the texture and intensity of color that the rain produced. I noticed this fabulous reflection of the field in the large raindrop and knew this was the image I wanted to capture. I set up my tripod, adjusted my settings for the cloudy skies, and exposed to make the background dark. The resulting image is one of my favorites. (Please click the photo above to see a larger view of the reflection.)
Family Of Flycatchers
Family Of Flycatchers
By: Benjamin DeHaven
I know this is not the first family of birds posted in our newsletter, but I really enjoyed watching these guys at Bombay Hook NWR. Now, at the end of summer, these birds will be expected to begin to hunt for themselves. These are Eastern Wood-Pewee, members of the Flycatcher family. The Flycatchers earned their name by the way they hunt. The adult sits on the stick watching for an insect. When it spots one, it flies off after the insect grabbing it in mid air, and then usually flys back to the same perch. Watching the mid-air acrobatics that it takes in order to catch a fly on the wing is fascinating!

It is amazing that even birds as small as these still value family. The parent will spend hour upon hour feeding the little mouths (or... not so little in this case). And to see this time and again throughout the refuge... Summer truly is a magical time to be out in nature. Whether it be flycatchers or a line of raccoons following behind mother, fox kits wrestling by the den or tadpoles dodging the hungry Green Herons, life finds a way to survive and even thrive in the swamps of Delaware.
Lotus I

One fun thing to do in summer is to visit a local aquatic garden. If you reside in the greater Baltimore/Washington area, it's worth a visit to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens located just outside of Washington, D.C. in Anacostia Park.  This outdoor garden boasts roughly 700 acres of water gardens and wild wetlands, and during the late summer the water gardens are abloom with a multitude of waterlilies of various colors and sizes. In addition to the flowers, there are turtles, butterflies, dragonflies, ladybugs and a variety of birds.  Be careful walking around, though, because the wetlands are also home to various water snakes.
