Take this with a grain of salt: Notable area media personality Hernandez says Friday's board meeting at Maryland concluded with the belief UMD Prez Loh, AD Evans & FB HC Durkin should all be removed from their respective positions. Further, Hernandez says former Terps MBB HC Williams could be targeted as the Interim AD. Hernandez says the timeline is two weeks. (link); The Baltimore Sun's Barker & Marbella ink on the broader questions in College Park as a result of the ongoing developments. The pair get comments from Texas crisis management expert Hunt, who was hired by Penn State to help handle the Sandusky saga. On athletic departments, "They’re powerful – you have huge egos involved. You wake up one day and they’re isolated, and there’s a lack of institutional control over them." Hunt does not believe it's a function of turning a blind eye to problems, simply that leaders have "a million other things" on their plates. (link)
Ohio State FB HC Meyer's newly-signed contract contains language that is becoming more common in coaching deals of late, as California-based sports lawyer Swerdlow says, "Every college coach that I work with now should expect some version of this language." Meyer's contract "requires that he notify the university's Title IX coordinator for athletics about 'any known violations' of its sexual misconduct policy — including sexual assault and harassment and 'intimate violence' — involving students or staff." The question, of course, is whether those terms require him to report previous issues. Of note, firing Meyer without cause would cost OSU $38M in buyout money. (link)
America East boss Huchthausen & still newish WCC Commish Nevarez sat with Parker Executive Search VP & Managing Director of Sports Parker to hit on key points of league leadership. Huchthausen: "Every group has those who are most vocal, but most vocal doesn’t always translate to most influential. […] It’s really important for us to make informed decisions as a conference, so I always make sure we as a group consider an opposing the view so that we are covering all of our bases." Nevarez: "There’s a lot disparity in a conference. You can be at the top of the league with a perspective and sometimes you aren’t. It really takes an ear to the ground and constant communication. […] There is a lot of conversation that happens before an issue actually makes it into the meeting room. […] In my conference, our ADs are usually in the chair for the first time, so it’s really important to reach out and develop relationships so as to help them understand the dynamics of the league." More. Video includes annotations for easy consumption. (link)
WRAL.com has setup a searchable database of what looks like 16K+ pages N.C. State submitted to federal investigators in connection to the MBB saga. From WRAL, "Editor's note: Given the number of documents in the system, search may take several seconds to return results." (link)

Michigan AD Manuel is in Spain with the Wolverines MBB squad & has assumed more of a hands-on leadership role with HC Beilein back in the States recovering from heart surgery. Manuel points to the significant student-athlete experience value of the nine-day trip, "If you break down what it costs per player to do something like this. I think that’s better than just handing out money. The educational value and the trip itself, that’s an investment in them for their lifetime." The entry from The Athletic includes a number of visit details, Manuel also offers, "I can’t comment on any investigation, but there’s no indication, at this point in time, that basketball shoes or anything that was distributed to the basketball team, or anything that Nike or Jordan distributed to other people around the basketball program, is included." (link)

"We want this facility to open as quickly as possible. That’s why, this fall, we are putting our funding strategies together, our fundraising campaign.  We need to go through the exercise … of site selection, of programming and of design. (We want) a design that is going to be very efficient to construct, so, we’re working very diligently and hoping this is going to be a very fast-moving project." That's UTSA AD Campos on a new 'Center of Excellence for Roadrunner Athletics,' a project Prez Eighmy highlighted during Campos' introductory presser. Campos says she's been impressed by the level of competitive success achieved by her HCs in comparison to the facilities they have to work with, has not yet formed an opinion on exactly where the new digs should go on campus. A bit more. (link)
The Monitor's Editorial Board comments on the UTRGV FB feasibility study recently made public, wonders if a key piece of the study, strategic conference alignment, is possible given the Vaqueros geographic positioning & travel costs associated with getting to & from the Rio Grande Valley. Of note, "An unwritten but obvious concern is the need for the football program, like its other sports teams, to be competitive. People will lose interest in a perennial loser, so the university will have to be willing to invest in coaching staffs that improve their chances of success. Would it be better to wait until the university has more alumni who are willing to support their team even during losing seasons? […] Academics is a university’s primary mission, but a strong athletic program can put UTRGV on the map faster than academic achievements." (link)
Notre Dame FB Special Teams Coordinator Polian dives into his time as HC at Nevada, where he went 23-27 in four season, but notes he wasn't hired by current Wolf Pack boss Knuth, "I was hired with someone else’s philosophy in mind. I understand that I was not Doug’s hire — it’s OK, it’s a reality of our profession." During his time in Reno, Polian says he learned two key lessons for leading a 'Group of 5' program: 1) Fundraising is critical; and, 2) Scheduling guarantee games is important for the financial picture of the entire department. Wants to be a HC again, believes he would improve in every aspect of running a program, "I am in a sort of coaching limbo. Not a failure, but not an overwhelming success, either. I don’t think the final chapter of my head coaching book is written yet." Interesting read. (link)
Personnel Notes: More than 100 former UC San Diego Women's Soccer student-athletes penned a letter to the editor of The San Diego Union-Tribune expressing their support for Tritons HC McManus, who recently resigned following allegations of NCAA rules violations. Believing UC San Diego mishandled the situation, the former S-A's declared: "We find it shameful that UCSD has turned their backs on the very man who laid the groundwork for the school’s acceptance into Division I. ...He could have left the university more than once to take a Division I job. But he remained loyal. And we remain loyal to him. ...To UCSD, you’ve just lost hundreds and hundreds of supporters from alumni, parents, players and donors. Your decision flies in the face of everything Brian taught us to be. As we stand at the forefront of a nationwide effort to empower and protect women, it is even more perplexing that the university would dishonor a man who inspired young women year after year to succeed and thrive." (link); Georgia FB has eight staffers with the words "quality control" or "analyst" in their titles, including former Georgia Southern HC Summers. Here's a look at what exactly they do. (link); Longtime Omaha World-Herald columnist Barfknecht says he took a buyout and his 39 years at the paper will come to a close in a couple of weeks. (link)
ESPN opinion-ist Smith may be unwatchable on TV at times, but this clip from his talk with Syracuse FB is really solid. The overall theme is maximizing potential. Smith: "If you're standing still or going backwards, you ain't living. [...] When I give speeches, I tell people, 'I'm brilliant,' cause I know I'm not. I'm never satisfied. I learn from people who are brilliant and I steal knowledge from them. The same is applicable to you. If you see somebody better than you, if you look and in your mind's eye see someone who has something that you don't, why not ask yourself 'why?' Why not ask yourself, 'How can you get it?' Who told you that they get to have a monopoly on greatness?" (link)

Rutgers AD Hobbs touched on a litany of subjects after Fan Appreciation Day, including the impact former Scarlet Knight standout Conlin, who now serves as prez of Horizon BCBS of New Jersey, had in getting the deal between the two entities done. Hobbs expects FB will be better, bigger, faster and stronger, but calls the Big Ten East the most competitive division in the country. With future games against Boston College, Temple, Syracuse and Monmouth, says the "Northeast scheduling" is intentional as HC Ash believes it is helpful to building a program. More on the Horizon deal's impact on fan experience: "You want folks to come on game day and feel like they’re getting other things. When you get a free health screening, you don’t necessarily expect that when you come to a football game, but it’s pretty cool, right? It’s a little bit of value added back to folks, and then you see we’re starting to add some more healthy-food options inside the stadium. There will be other things as well. We would like to partner with more corporations and have more partnerships here in New Jersey, where on game-day folks come down and have a lot of outside-the-stadium fun before they come into the stadium." CBSSports.com's CFB writers spoke with one-fifth of the 129 active FBS coaches on a variety of topics, including who among their peers is the most overrated/underrated. Top-four most overrated answers: Florida State's Taggart (20%), Penn State's Franklin (20%), Iowa's Ferentz (13%), FAU's Kiffin (13%). On the flip side, Stanford's Shaw (12%), Washington's Petersen (12%), Florida's Mullen (8%), Northwestern's Fitzgerald (8%) and Utah's Whittingham (8%) were the most underrated. Some notable comments: "James Franklin. His coaching peers know he is full of it." "I'm probably a little jealous [of Lane Kiffin]. If you're born on third base, that's great, but don't think you hit a triple." Not tops on the list, but Texas A&M's Fisher took some hits, "We're going to see in the next three years [what happens with Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M]. That disaster last year at Florida State, he prides himself on being just like Nick Saban. He only worked for him for a couple of years. He never has the organizational skills. He flies by the seat [of his pants]. It looks like it's organized and the words he uses are the same, but if you talk to people who work in his office, the desk is sloppy, the rooms are sloppy." And on Alabama HC Saban: "If you count cheating and getting the best players in the country as part of running a program, he's the best in the country." (link)
While college officials believe integrity fees would help fund enhanced programs for educating student-athletes on gambling matters, the American Gaming Association opposes them. AGA SVP of Public Affairs Slane: "It’s absolutely absurd. There is no business that would agree to that. It’s not going to accomplish ultimately what I think the leagues would like to see, even the colleges would like to see, which is to have regulated, legalized sports betting and consumers partaking in that platform versus continuing down the path of the illegal market." Longtime gambling industry attorney Cabot, who says the NCAA would be like "ostriches with their heads in the sand" if it doesn't initiate its own integrity program: "We really do need a national system to protect the integrity of the games, and how much a single university could contribute to that is somewhat limited. ...Whether sports wagering is legal or illegal, it’s rampant. So to say we’re going to ignore this because we don’t like gambling is to ignore you had this significant industry that can impact the integrity of your games. To do nothing about it is, I think, irresponsible." Standard comments from several ADs on the importance of their jobs in protecting against point-shaving scandals or other gambling-related issues.
