Resending in case you missed this....
Hi, folks —
Quick Labor Day weekend e-mail to give you our latest audio!
On OutCasting, we conclude our discussion about LGBTQ women in AIDS activism at the height of the epidemic. Lesbians were generally at lowest risk of contracting HIV; what drew them into activism on behalf of people who were infected? Our guest is Ann Northrop, a longtime journalist and activist. She was active in the NYC chapter of ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power).
After the interview, OutCaster Lauren comments on the lack of context in her HIV education in school and about her generation being a bit adrift as a result. Listen here.
OutCasting Overtime features youth participant Alex talking about how the LGBTQ community has reclaimed the term "queer" as an empowering term. He thinks that perhaps queer is a better label for him than gay. Listen here.
And Alex interviews Nico, September's OutCaster of the Month. Listen here.
It's been another hot summer in our un-air-conditioned studio, and I think we're all ready for cooler weather. It's also the time of year when we say a bittersweet goodbye to our participants who are leaving for college — Lauren, Quinn, Nico, Max, and Sam. They've been great OutCasters and we wish for them all wonderful things in college and beyond.
Hope you've had a great summer. Talk to you again in October.
