Fall Preview

My apologies for the error, but I posted the wrong date for the New Hampshire Humanities event in October.  It is October 4th, not the 11th.
The error is timely only in that Millipore has just contacted me to change the time only (not the date) of the Curiosity Cube, due to another engagement that afternoon.  The Cube will open earlier on Saturday, September 29 at 9:30 am, but will have to finish up by 1 pm.
I have made the changes below, and added two afterschool classes by the Monadnock Interpretive Rangers.  Other than that, this is essentially the same newsletter sent out on August 24th since I am theoretically on vacation until next week. If you missed the August one, here's your chance to mark your calendars.
Thanks for your understanding.
Please feel free to contact me any time at jperrin@townofjaffrey.com.
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie

Two Classes by Monadnock Rangers

Wednesdays, September 12 and 19, 4:00 pm - Register for one or both!  Space is limited and registration is required.
Night Sounds (9/12) What’s that wild sound in the dark woods? There’s nothing to fear! Come learn about the creatures of the night and how they communicate. This event is led by the Americorp Interpretive Rangers of Monadnock State Park. Ages 5 and up. Register here.

Clouds (9/19) Clouds can tell us a lot about the weather and about ourselves. Relax and watch the clouds or make your own to take home. This event is led by the Americorp Interpretive Rangers of Monadnock State Park. Ages 5 and up. Register here.

The Curiosity Cube Returns to the Library

UPDATED TIME: Saturday, September 29 at 9:30 am - 1 pm on the Library Driveway
The ALL NEW Curiosity Cube is coming to the library on Saturday, September 29th. The new Cube has all new exhibits and experiments! Last year's visit was so exciting, and we all learned so much. Thank you, Millipore Sigma for bringing this free, unique learning experience to the library community!

Another Grant?! Yes, but what is Code Club?

Code Club begins Tuesday, October 2nd at 4 pm in the Wetherell Computer Room
We are so excited to be one of only 50 libraries in the country and the only library in NH to receive a Code Club grant to fund a youth coding club for one year. Code Club is a fun, interactive after-school program that is open to all youth 8-18.  We invite you to learn how to make video games, apps, websites and more!
Why code? Check out this video: https://youtu.be/nKIu9yen5nc
Why the library?  We have a mission to promote literacy in ALL its forms, and  technological and digital literacy are part of that mission. The library is also a place where our local youth have gravitated for all kinds of learning and recreation, so we are a perfect venue to promote coding literacy in a safe, welcoming environment.
To our youth: This is NOT school! Work at your own pace, work with your peers and librarians, and learn how to do the coolest things! Coding is truly a superpower!
We will have ten computers available, but you can bring your own laptop or chromebook, if you don't want to potentially have to share a computer. (Sorry, this program is not tablet friendly.) You are not required to attend every week, although Code Club will happen every week.
See Ms. Julie for details.
Thank you to Prenda, the Institute of Museum & Library Services, North Dakota State Library, and the Association of Small and Rural Libraries for funding this great opportunity!

Book Clubs for All Ages

After a summer break, our monthly book clubs for all ages return. Registration opens in September, at which time, books will be on hand for check out.  With the exception of our daytime adult book discussion, As the Page Turns, all other clubs will have their first fall meetings in October.
Registration is required for all of our Book Clubs.  You may register in person, by calling the library, or online on our Event Calendar.  (If you don't see a "Register" button, that book club's registration form may not yet be open.  Please call us with any concerns at 532-7301.)

Children & Teen Book Clubs will ALL meet on Fridays at 4 pm.  So much easier to remember!
  • Genre Tasting for Grades 2-12 - October 5 This multi-age book club allows participants to choose their own title in a specified genre, read it, and share it with the group in a discussion and cooking experiment facilitated by your librarians.  October's genre is SCIENCE FICTION.
  • My First Book Club for PreK - Grade 1 – October 12  Join Ms. Eileen for some fun with Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.
  • Mad Scientist Book Club for Grades 2 -5 – October 19   In honor of the bat who hung out in the library earlier this month, we will discuss Andrew Lost - With the Bats.  A special activity is planned!
  • STEAM Reads for Grades 5-8 – October 26   Get ready for The Case of the Vanishing Little Brown Bats: A Scientific Mystery.
And for adults:
  • As the Page Turns - Monday, September 10 at 2 pm  Each month, the group is led by a different member. September’s discussion is Love and Summer by William Trevor.
  • Cookbook Club – Monday, October 15 at Noon -  Assorted titles by Yotam Ottolenghi will be available.
  • Radical Reads  - Thursday, October 11 at 6:30 pm The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, an award winning novel and one of the year’s most frequently banned books. Note: Radical Reads has moved to the SECOND Thursday of the month.
We borrow multiple copies of all our Book Club titles from other libraries so pick up your copy at the Main Circulation desk.

Pillowcases, please?

In October, we will be adding a new evening Pajama Storytime on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm, to provide an opportunity for for working parents to enjoy Storytime at the library with their children. Can you donate a pillowcase?

From our promotion: Put on your PJs, grab your favorite stuffie, and wind down the day with some favorite bedtime stories. Don't forget to check out a Bedtime Bundle for easy-pick stories to take home.

We need your gently used, colorful pillowcases so we can create those Bedtime Bundles. We have to squeeze storytime into just a half hour before closing. We want to be sure everyone can grab a pre-selected bundle so they don't miss the fun of bringing home stories, too. Thanks for your help!

One More Building Upgrade

Library will be closed for flooring installation

In the last year and a half, we have installed a new climate control system, renovated bathrooms, painted walls, installed flooring on the ground level and the top floor, installed a handicapped automatic door opener, shifted collections, plus countless smaller behind the scenes upgrades.  We have tried to limit any disruptions of service as much as possible, and only for the carpet cleaning did we actually close the library for one day.
The good news is that we are finally able to replace the worn and torn carpet on the main floor (NOT the carpet that was cleaned), but to do so means emptying all the stacks and moving everything temporarily for the work to be done, and then back again. For this to happen, we have to close the library for a period of one week. We promise it will be worth it. At this time, we are planning the week of September 24th - Monday through Friday, with a reopening on Saturday, September 29th for the Curiosity Cube.  This timing will allow us to have our new, safe, beautiful flooring in place before all the fall programs begin.
We will keep you posted as scheduling is finalized, but wanted you to have as much notice as possible. Thank you for your support and cooperation. This project is being funded by donor bequests.  We are so grateful for your gifts to the library, past, present and future. Thank you!
We toasted our Summer Learning Assistants, Courtney and Oliver (with sparkling cider) on one of their last days with us. Thank you to the Community Center of Jaffrey for your financial support that allowed them to be part of our summer learning team!  Watch their video about their experience: https://youtu.be/PqXUdTo3EMo

Save the "corrected" date: Humanities Event

Richard Hesse presents “The Founding Fathers: What Were They Thinking?”

In 1787 delegates gathered in Philadelphia to address a wide variety of crises facing the young United States of America and produced a charter for a new government. In modern times, competing political and legal claims are frequently based on what those delegates intended. Mythology about the founders and their work at the 1787 Convention has obscured both fact and legitimate analysis of the events leading to the agreement called the Constitution. Richard Hesse explores the cast of characters called "founders," the problems they faced, and the solutions they fashioned.

Professor Emeritus at the UNH School of Law, Richard Hesse has published on a variety of legal and ethical topics. He served as a community lawyer in Philadelphia, heading a police community relations project before moving to Boston to head a national project focused on the rights of consumers. His academic concentration is on state and federal constitutional law and international human rights. Hesse has been an advocate for civil and human rights for more than 50 years and was twice awarded the Bill of Rights Award by the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, with a grant from New Hampshire Humanities.  It is free and open to the public, and will take place in the library.

We hope you had a great Labor Day weekend.

Best wishes to all of our students and teachers for an excellent school year.
We look forward to seeing you at the library!
