The importance of a child having a creative, stimulating learning environment cannot be stressed enough. Only through creating such an environment can their minds be stimulated thus enabling better learning, thinking and problem solving. The learning environments should include lots of books, visual materials and activities and as our world continues to become more technological, this must also of course, include access to the technology to prepare them for the world they will live in. They should experience not just using the technology, but creating the content for that technology and for others to access.
Stop motion animation is ideally suited to nurturing creativity and can be used throughout the curriculum and phases. It provides lots of opportunities for learning and its advantage over other sorts of filmmaking medium is that there are no real boundaries, which is a major plus for schools. Costs can be kept low and it is ideal for use at any skill level, resourcing is easily achievable and the filming environment can be almost anywhere. All in all, this means it is ideal for children of any age (and adults) to embrace and get involved in.
It is essential however, not to use it in isolation, and to explore the diverse ways in which it can be used and the multitude of mediums that can be used to animate with. Additionally, the whole process leading to the point of filming your animation can include a plethora of other activities, creative writing, arts and crafts, maths, humanities. The content of the animation could encompass science, history, modern foreign languages, and strengthens team work and co-operation. In fact you'd be hard pushed to find an area of the curriculum where stop motion animation could not be used. At a time when creative arts are seemingly being squeezed out in schools due to resources, budget and time constraints, you can and should, embrace stop motion animation.
