Corsham Walking Festival - Communications

This newsletter is being sent to the approx 580 people who have either walked with a previous Walking Festival or have asked to be put on our mailing list.  I would like to give a particular welcome to those who are receving it for the first time as a result of joining us for Festival 2018 - of which more below.

If you no longer wish to receive the newsletter, you can unsubscribe using the link at the foot of this email.
You can also use the link to update your subscriptions preferences - including becoming a (FREE) Friend of Corsham Walking Festival which will enable you to have a greater role in the organisation of future Festivals.

Festival 2018 - Feedback

On behalf of the Committee, I would like to offer my thanks to everybody who was involved in Festival 2018; the local walking groups and other organisations who provided the walk leaders/back markers, our sponsors who helped ensure the financial success of the Festival weekend - and of course the walkers who took part.

By any measure it was our most successful Festival ever:
  • 398 people booked to take part in a total of 27 walks.  83 people attended the Saturday evening Quiz and Buffet at which a raffle raised £228 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
  • Sales were brisk with 65% of tickets sold in the first 2 weeks – the first walk sold out in 3 days!
  • The distribution of sales was similar to previous years with just over 50% of bookings being made by Corsham residents with another 30% coming from local towns.  The Festival continues to be successful in attracting walkers from outside the local area with visitors this year from Coventry, Hampshire, Hereford and London.
  • Feedback from the survey was owerwhelmingly positive with 100% of respondents rating the walks and evening event as either Excellent or Very Good.
The Festival was opened by the Chair of Corsham Town Council and the weekend passed without any significant mishaps.  For reasons we don’t entirely understand, approx 22% of people who had booked on walks did not turn up – a significantly higher level than for previous Festivals.  Financially it did not affect us as the tickets had been paid for, but it was a shame that several sold out walks ended up with unfilled places.  On this occasion it can't have been the weather that was to blame - there was wall to wall sunshine for the whole weekend!

No major issues were identified via the survey, however as usual a number of more minor suggestions will be taken forward in the planning for Festival 2019.

Festival 2019

Our thoughts are already turning to Festival 2019 - which is planned for the weekend of 7 - 9 June 2019.  Detailed planning will commence following the election of a new Committee at the AGM of the Friends of Corsham Walking Festival which will be held in The Methuen on 4 October 2018.  The calling notice and agenda will be sent out to the Friends shortly.  If you are not already a Friend you can become one by updating your preferences via this link.

Although we have a fairly well established formula for running the Festival, it still requires enough people to make it work without putting an undue workload on those that have volunteered.  For the last couple of years we have had a number of vacancies on the Committee which has meant we have been unable to take forward a number of new initiatives and in addition this year some of the long serving members of the Committee will be standing down.

If we are to continuing running the Festival, we do need some new members of the Committee.  I am aware that many people are put off by the idea of joining a Committee (all those formal meetings!) and we are looking to increase the amount of work that can be done by sub groups who only meet as necessary for specific tasks.

By and large we can adjust roles to accommodate the number and interests of those who join the Committee or its sub groups, however we do have a particular need for a couple of volunteers to run our Website and Social Media presence (currently just Facebook) and to join a sub group to create digital maps of the planned walks.  You don't need to be an IT expert for either of these roles - previous experience would be helpful, but having the time and interest are the main pre-requisites!

If you would be interested in helping with these roles - or in any other capacity - please get in contact with myself or any other member of the Committee to discuss what is involved.

Walking Opportunities

The Corsham area provides walking opportunities all year round - whether self guided or with a local group.  The Corsham Bookshop and the Tourist Information Centre in Corsham High Street both have a small selection of booklets of local walks available for purchase and in addition there are a number of on line resources.

A number of national and local groups walk regularly in Corsham and the surrounding area and welcome new walkers.  If you do not walk regularly with the relevant group, it is advisable to contact them beforehand so they are aware of likely numbers on the walk.  More information - including contact details - can be found on the Corsham Walking Festival website or downloaded here

Walkers Are Welcome

The Walkers are Welcome updates for June July and August contain news from around the WAW Towns Networks.  We still have a vacancy on the Committee for somebody to coordinate similar initiatives in the Corsham area, if you can help in any way please get in touch.

Hope to see you at the AGM or on a walk in the Corsham area.
