Byron Shire Council is preparing a new Biodiversity Conservation Strategy. We're inviting the community to provide feedback into the strategy, based on their own experiences on our agricultural land.
Biodiversity loss is one of our most serious environmental problems. Habitat clearance and drainage of wetlands systems, human disturbance associated with development, inappropriate fire regime, pressure from pests and domestic animals and pollution, all result in declines to biodiversity through loss of genes, species, habitat and ecosystems. In working with all of our community we would like to avoid, minimise or reduce these impacts.
The workshop will include discussion of:
- What do you see as the key issues in managing biodiversity in Byron Shire and on agricultural land, and why?
- What are you already doing to promote biodiversity on your land?
- What do you see as your role and Council’s role in the management of biodiversity?
- How should we engage with you about biodiversity matters on your land?
- What do you see as the major pest issues (weed & pest animals)?
- What role does fire play on your land?
Following the consultation period, Council will draft the Strategy prior to public exhibition in early 2019.
