Telehealth Brings Care to Patients During Florence’s Fury

SCTA partner health systems offer online visits, at NO charge, during Hurricane Florence. With the uncertainty before the storm, during the storm and more importantly during the aftermath, patients in South Carolina got free medical care from their mobile devices just by logging on and clicking a few buttons. McLeod Health, in an area most impacted by Hurricane Florence, is continuing its free online visit promotion through Thursday, September 27th!

Tune in to South Carolina ETV on Friday, September 21st at 7:30pm for This Week in South Carolina. The show will feature a special telehealth story concerning Hurricane Florence featuring Palmetto Health.
Collaboration is key to the success of the SCTA and its providers. New services and programs are being developed on a daily basis and one of the initial conversations is focused on the availability of staff. Dr. Kathryn Cristaldi is a consulting physician for new services, and is leading many of these discussions. She is also an attending pediatrician at MUSC Children’s Health and serves as the medical director for School-based Health.

Dr. Cristaldi works with providers across the state to consider location of telehealth services, workflows and protocols needed to identify providers who will deliver the services.

Governor Henry McMaster signing Senate Bill 345.

Governor Expresses Support for Telehealth at Bill Signing

Before a ceremonial bill signing at the state house, Gov. Henry McMaster said he hopes to see telehealth continue to grow across the state.

“I look forward to the day we have total telemedicine in the state, when all the people on their cell phone can have access to medical care,” said McMaster.

Senate Bill 345, which expands practice abilities and cuts regulations for advanced practice nurses (APRNs), went into effect July 1.

As the law’s supporters gathered in the governor’s office Wednesday, including health administrators, nurse practitioners, and state legislators, the governor said the law’s greatest impact will be in rural communities.

The law also allows for APRNs to see patients through telehealth, using the same rules and guidelines that apply to physicians.
