Scot Knot: September 2018

Cheering on the Scots

The Maryville College athletics program has a strong reputation for competitive play, but in recent years, the teams have given everyone something to cheer about. Last season, the Scots’ USA South Athletic Conference winning percentage of nearly 70 percent was the best since joining the league in 2012. Add to that statistic conference championships, NCAA tournament play and numerous individual accolades, and we can agree that this is an exciting time, indeed!

This academic year, we welcome (or welcome back) to campus more than 350 student-athletes. These young adults are eager, focused, relentless and hungry to compete! The halls of Cooper Athletic Center are already full of battle cries, ice bags and shouts of elation. Yes, there also are times of doubt, disappointment and frustration, but one of the beautiful things that athletics teaches is how to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to work.

Someone just recently asked me an important question, “How do you know when the Scots are successful?” We are more than wins and losses. Winning should be the by-product of hard work, selfless play, good sportsmanship, being prepared, grit and sometimes luck. Our athletes are training hard in their craft, completing hundreds of hours in community service, competing at the top tier of the conference all while striving for excellence in the classroom.

The season is now underway. I hope you will join us for a very exciting year. Everyone is encouraged to cheer for the Scots in person, but for those who cannot, almost 100 events will be live streamed. With 10,000 daily followers, the Scots’ social media presence is ranked No. 5 in Division III athletics. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @MCScots.

Athletics schedules are online, and a new calendar for parents and families has been added, too. Stay informed!
